I have a 1983 250r that does not want to shift past 3rd gear. If you do manage to get it in 4th, it really bogs the engine down. Do you guys have any idea why?

Sounds like something is binding up in there and causing drag if you do get it to go into gear. If the other gears are ok that rules out the other components like the clutch etc. Your gonna have to tear into it. At least it's a real simple motor to split, not alot of parts to it...

Take spark plug out. With engine off, put trans in each gear and rotate rear tire. Engine will turn. When it shifts into 4th, if it suddenly turns real hard, then theres a bearing or gear or something damaged. If so, dont ride it till its fixed, the metal shavings can ruin other things.

If its bad, I've got a 83-84R bottom end I'll sell ya. It spins over pretty good, goes through all the gears, and the splines on the kicker and shifter shafts are fine.
