Need Performance

I have a Suzuki 85' 230 lt 4 stroke and was looking at how to make it faster. This 4-wheeler is stock and needs rings, if I replace the rings I might as well add performance parts to go faster.

well, i can help you with a few things. i know these quads pretty good. first, rebuild the top end. not only rings, but new piston and hone the cylinder. then i would adjust valves etc. look into a k&n filter or a uni. do you have the stock exhaust on it? if so, i found a neat little trick to do to make some power. do this if you have access to the welder. take off your stock muffler and cut it right at the end. cut about 4 inches of the pipe out of the cannister and weld it back together. after your finished, your muffler should be about four inches shorter. this makes a huge difference!! i couldnt believe the power increase i felt. good luck and let me know what you plan on doing.

You would use stock pistons or higher compression (and bore or just hone)? change cams or stay with stock?

hell. the bigger the better. for money sake, just buy a piston and rings, oem or maybe wiseco. i dont know if any company makes cams for that quad. but definetely look into the exhaust modification. you wont regrett it.

my friends 230 has a dg system, sounds pretty good. it runs right with my buddies piped 300ex. surprising how powerful the lil thing is.

I wouldn't put too much into it. More then likely you'll be able to sell it and take that money with the money you were going to invest in to it and buy a better quad. Without serious $ it will never do anymore then hang with a 300ex. Even a 300ex would be a better quad concidering power and suspension.

is it the quadrunner 230 or the quadsport 230? they look the same but the quadrunner has racks on back and is automatic, the quadsport is more a sport machine and manual tranny. my brother had one back in 86, brand new, and back then he had a thing called the "viper huricane kit" installed in it without my dads knowing, well until he went and paid for a standard servicing and ended up paying like 250 bucks or so more, but that was back in 86, big difference in dollar values now. yeah my bro got into some serious trouble from my dad, lol, but it made a huge difference on the bike. thing would walk away from my 200x, and it would even walk away from the then top of the line honda four stroke the 250x. basically the more you can get it to breathe on both intake and exhaust, the more power you will make. i doubt the kit is still available, but you could do a search for it. i believe the kit had something to do with different valves, rings, piston, and honing done, plus some work on the carb, not sure though, i was like 15 then and that was 20 years ago.

Webcam still makes cams for this bike, I just pulled the site up to make sure, they have 3, one for just a little more power, one for some more power with a pipe, filter, and new piston, and one for all out racing. They are 112.00 a cam.

my buddy back in the day had a Q-sport and he ran the web race cam, 10 or 10.5 wisco piston, ported head, and some kind of pipe.....it ran real well

Just remember, every Webcam camshaft is a hardweld so to install it correctly you'll need the hardened rockers. Figure in the age of quad you'll want vavle springs too. Starts adding up quick.

while you have the head off,get it ported.it makes a big difference. but most likely,some one will want 200 bucks to do so.or you can buy a small engine porting kit 60 bucks and do it yourself.it is not that hard to port a 4 stroke head.but is messy work.metal chips everywhere.
