Hello everyone, im new here, and need some help, i have a 1986 350X, i was going down the road when it suddenly wouldnt rev up anymore, i dont know why, it doesnt seem to be carburation, it starts perfectly and wont rev up no matter how easy you are on the throttle, it just gets up to around 1,200-1,500 RPM and then sputters, theres black smoke, and sounds almost like a rev limiter, it seems to be missing to tell you the truth, what does everyone think? Any help would be greatly appreciated, my brothers and i live 20 miles from Glamis, and its about to get hot real soon, theres not much more time to ride this season, and we just got two 2006 TRX400's and we cant all go out and ride, its very frusterating, as im sure everyone in here can understand. alright then thanks for any help.

Your possitive it isnt carburation? I had my SX plug up like that and would rev any higher than 1/8 throttle.

check the carb and timing ,ive seen cracked ceramic on a spark plug cause problems like that.

Well, im thinking its not carburation because of the black smoke, thats telling me there enough fuel, or more than enough, so i would think the motor would atleast rev up even if it stalled if i was to crack it wide open real quick, if its carburation and its showing those symptoms, what do you think could be happening? If its not carburation i think its electrical, and i think the black smoke is being cause by the plug not firing and the fuel exploding more in the exhaust system, someone said it could be the stator, i dont know what that is, is it like a magneto? does anyone know of anyway i could check that before i pull it out and replace it? Thanks for all the help, we'd love to get the 350X back running again, its a nice bike, and we spent today in Glamis with the two TRX400's and it just wasnt the same without the 350X there, thanks for any help

use the service manual link http://www.files.3wheelerworld.com/Manuals/85n86ATC350XPartsFiche.pdf should tell you how to test the electrical there.

sounds like a coil or coil wire or bad plug or plug boot.those take like 5 minutes to check.unscrew the plug boot and see if there is corrosion inside th plug wire.if so trim about a 1/4 inch off the wire, throw a new boot on and see how she runs then.could also be a short in your on off switch or kill switch if you have one.
