OK, Im sure most of you are getting sick of me asking the same question but, WHY IS MY BIKE STILL RUNNING RICH?? Low end and mid are AWESOME! Its my top end thats sputtering.....Most of you know what setup i have but i'll do a recap. Im running a 85R with pt hr fatboy tip ,rad valve, trail porting,Fresh topend,20 over piston,38 air stryker <---------(that im begining to think is a POS) atc gasket,no airbox with a k&n filter.Running 180psi with 1/2 race 1/2 pump HP2 @ 40:1 with a Br8Es plug. Checked my stator, water pressure, air leaks, head gasket, and everything people out here have said to do! Im now down to a 150 main and its starting to back fire but my plugs are still wet! Im thinking its my needle.IT was at the 4th clip but i move it to the 2nd and it seemed to clean it up at the top end.Ny needle has 4 numbers on it..Is there another needle i could be using? and if so what is the part#? There is no way i could be this low in a main jet.Im about to crack my head and look at my rings and piston to see whats up.. Is this a jet problem or something else?? I just don't know anymore!!!!! PLEASE HELPPPP

What oil are you using? Try leaning the mix out or getting a different oil... klotz maybe

Is your plug clean wet,or black wet?You may have a bad reed,or you may want to check your needle seat! Also check for any air leaks around the intake boot, and rad valve.Spray it with carb cleaner while running and see if rpm's go up or down.

Honda Hp2 @40:1... I was told not to use klotz because it doesnt lub the motor like synthetic.

I was just refering that you might want to use a higher quality oil like klotz. Try leaning the mix out to 45:1 that should lean it out a little for you. Just remember, running a little ritch just ensures the life of your machine!

what kind of elevation are you riding in. What kind of "race gas" are you using. You could run straight 93 octane pump gas.

around 500 to sealevel..I tried a new needle with a 150 main and its clearing out quite nice now..I let you guys know how it turns out...150 seems a little low for a 38 stryker but whatever works i guess!!!

well you can buy different needle, and slide cut as well as change jets.changing jets are the most effective, but you may need a different needle.
call duncan and tell them your setup.they will guve a good starting point.

150 does sound lean, it could be too rich of a pilot jet too. Trust me, your 38 a/s is not the problem, your pilot and/or needle is too rich.

Well, i finaly got a few test rides today :) Im now running klots r50 40:1 with 165 main.Dropped the Pilot from a 55 to 50..Changed my needle to what duncan told me to run added an adjustable timing plate from hinson and move it to 4+ i believe..I had someone helping me that who knows more about timing then me..Fixxed my choke on my a/s and added a new flange. New k&n filter and the setup is really trick..No box either..My plugs are dark tan and it pulls power wheelies in 6th now WHOOHOOO! Not sure what fixxed it maybe the combo of everything but its running harder then ever :) Pics comign soon! THanks for all the help! Lets just hope i dont burn her up  PS Anybody got a 4+ swinger they wanna sell lol :)

More oil does NOT mean richer jetting. Actually it's just the opposite. Since a thicker gas/oil mix flows slower, you're actually leaning the mixture by running more oil. You don't control mixture by gas/oil ratio.

I had a similar issue with sputtering on the top end. First I was running way too rich. I dropped my main jet from a 178 in the 40mm PWK down to 160. It made a little difference but not much. I finally pulled the carb out and checked the needle. The needle had been jammed up quite far and the e-clip was damaged. I put it back together with the clip in the 3rd position. It ran great down low and into the mid but still really sputtered up top. I was dying to take it out so I just went anyway. As soon as I was able to open it up down a long straight it cleared out and ran like the beast she was meant to be.
I think there was just a lot of unburnt oil and gas in the bottom end from when the needle was messed up.
I'm running a 178 main and a 42 pilot. Make sure your not running to lean up top.

no , dont lean the oil/gas mixture for gods sake...i would run 32:1 and not a bit leaner.
are you continuing to lean it out because the plug is wet? who cares how the plug looks, how does it run? is it blubbering out a hugr cloud of smoke and having a hard time clearing out?
if it is spraying oily crap out the pipe and all this leaning out you have done has had no effect, your right side crank seal could be leaking, allowing the motor to suck tranny oil into the crankcase.
really, who cares if it is a little rich with a moist plug, that is a little extra fuel and lubrication, it will let the motor run cooler and live longer

Why? I am running 40:1 in mine. Synthetic. Nice cardboard looking color on plug.

first of all, its pointless to run race gas in a 180 psi motor, around 210 and you can run 50/50, just run premium and it will make it easier to jet, race gas can be a slut to jet. your probable losing power there too. once again-POINTLESS TO RUN RACE GAS. dont waste your money, my trail motor runs 220 psi and i use premium with NO KNOCK and i know what im doing. i used to mix 50/50 until i used just premium one day on accident and it is quite a bit snappier, remember all race gas does is slow down how long it takes for the a/f mix to burn. try pump premium youll be surprised and it will be easier on your wallet.

Yeah, i wasn't to sure on the race fuel but it seems to help..Ill try running just pump and see what happens..Im not to sure about the 165 main still.. Im going to take it easy and read my plugs as much as possible..Or i just do it the easy way and let her warm up just a tad then go ride it and if it wants to clear out right away its lean but if it takes a min or so to clear out then its on the rich side.. I might bump it up to a 172 and see what happens..Going riding in a few days ill have some vids and pics :).. Thanks again for everybodys help..I've never owned an R that was such a *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited* to jet!!! lol
