My dad said that he wants to get me a four wheeler in the 1 - 3 grand range (a used one) to ride. I know a dude who's selling a '85 Tri-Z for 1200, runs and comes w/ extra frame and an '86 bottom end for the motor, complete w/ transmission. It needs new brake pads in back, new shock seals front and back, and a sprocket/chain change. How do I convince my dad to get it instead of the junky Polaris Xplorer 300 he wants to buy for 1800 instead?? Help me out!

His arguments:
-It's old and probably won't hold up to your riding (based on what I did to а certain ATC 125, but that's a whole other story)
-You'll need it for more than fun (which is his way of saying unless it has racks, I'm not getting it).

My arguments:
- The Tri-Z is reliable (is it?)
- I have a site to help me work out problems (that'd be you guys :beer )
- It's cheaper
- I like trikes

Is there any other positive argument I should add here? Or a negative one about quads?

Dammit!

Convince him the trike will be a better father/son project. You can spend time restoring it together. If he says you can restore a quad together you can come back with, "yeah, but it's a quad so what's the point?"

My dad isn't the kinda guy who likes messing with machinery, I inherited that from my grandpa. On my mom's side.

From the sounds of it i would offer the guy less than $1200 for that Z.

Yeah.. I would probably offer less than $1000 too.
And Z's are reliable.. or atleast mine seems to be. Derrick told me that it never left him stranded before I bought it, and it has never left me stranded since then.
Z's definately will hold up to what you want it for. They are a sport trike, they can do anything. Race, ride, jump, mud, etc. etc. They can do anything..
And as far as "having more than fun with it", I don't know..

I will SECOND that motion!!! 1 day riding = 2 days repair!! And this is coming from someone who don't care for Yamaha's.

Is polaris 4x4's realy that bad? My cousin has a 01 sportsman 800 and the only thing he has had to do to it since he has owned it is change the oil and stuff like that. He is also running over sized tires too. :wondering

Well in that case, tell him since you're the one that has to work on it, you should be able to get the one you want! :w00t:

Seriously, talk to him about the simplicity of a 2-stroke trike versus that quad. Repairs will be easier and cheaper!

I don't want to hijack the thread, but my main P3 has given me quite a bit of grief. If it wasn't for the way it rides I probably would park it as a show piece. lol

polaris are ok dont get me wrong but they really need to be maintaind really well. If there not they will nickel and dime you to death! seems like every thing wears out at the same time! the main thing are the shafts, wheel bearings, primary clutch, starter clutch, cam, and the rear shock and if you have a solid axel and have to change the rear carrer bearings,be real carefull if the lock nuts are frozen and have to apply heat! The threds on the axel are real fine and will melt under the nut and smear right off! then you need a new axel!

Why do you even have to have a release, why cant you just sell it to him? I've never signed a release for buying a trike.

Why let him buy either one? I was 15 when I asked my pop to buy me one and he said no, not with his money. So I got a job and saved my pennies, and bought my own dirtbike. My mom said no, you cant have that, but it was my money and my pop took up for me. As long as it is some one elses money you will almost always loose, but if it is your own then you will be more likely to win. That is my $.02

Like he said, you can either save you money and buy a trike/whatever and parentals cant say much, or you can try your best to convice your pa to get the Z. Tell him the problems with Polaris quads that have been stated on here. The Z defitetly will not break down that much.

Yup, 2 buddies of mine both got used polaris quads around the same time, they're always having problems, I.E., cracked swingarm(on both, & these guys don't ride 'em THAT hard), clutches, brakes, oh the list goes on, get that Z, but talk that boy down! 1200 is too much!
