I was at Paragon AP this weekend and going in the mud holes and stuff in the play area and after i was done my breaks did not want to work. From what i have read on the net this is a common problem with drum breaks. does any one know if there is a drun to disc converion kit for a 85 250es or any thing else that would be close?

Hey you should let me know next time your heading there. I'm less than 10 minutes from there. How'd you like it?

Anywho.. Once mud and muck get in there that can mess them up pretty good. Take the drum off and give them a good cleaning with a wire brush and some brake cleaner. I've noticed almost everytime I go out on my SX and hit the mudholes the next day my brakes are squealing and making all kinds of funky noises.

I was checking out some prices and looks like they are going for about 350$. little out of my price range. what if i would get parts from like a 250r and put them on there would that work with a little hard work?

Mud and grit will eat up brake pads just as fast or faster than shoes. The main differnce is that disk brakes are self adjusting while drum have to be adjusted manually. You didnt explain what exactly "not working" means. Iff you can pull teh lever all the way in, or push the pedal all the way down, you can start by just ajusting the nut on the end of the cable or rod.

good old soap and water for cleaning out mud and clay -

be sure you grease everything well when you put it back together - including the seal and the pivot stud - this will help keep mud and water out in the future. If well maintained, you can submerge these old machines in mud and water with nothing getting in. The brake drum cover must have a good seal though. any tear or rip, and they will get dirt and mud in them, giving you what you have now. Also, they have a drain plug in them - check to be sure it is in and tight.

Well i finaly got my brakes working correctly. seems the problem was the shaft that goes in to the drums was getting stuck either by a little rust or it was dirt either or i cleaned that up and not its working like new. So i went out to test them seemed to work fine on the 4 hour ride i was on went in the mud to see if it does it again and it seems that mt hand brake did it again but the foot brake worked fine. didnt realy mind still had the foot brake. so i drove in a spring and after that it seemed to work again. maybe it was just muddy... any how now the front brakes are giving me issues but that will be another day.
