I recently bought a 250r with a "rebuilt" motor.I have a feeling it was taken apart but not rebuilt correctly. Its not running to good (carb issues) which im workin on now but good enough to ride around the house and tune. Anyway it shifts through the gears ok but when i down shift it clicks like its downshifting but i let out the cluch its like its in neutral until i get down to 2nd or 3rd gear an hard to get back to 1st. I know im gonna have to take it apart but it will be my 1st time doing so.Any ideas what could be wrong and what should I be looking for? Thanks. Rob

hey rob, where in ohio are you?it sounds like maybe a return spring is worn,or broke,or maybe the shifter fork is tweaked

Youngstown. Have you ever rebuilt one? Im trying to decide whether or not to attempt this myself or take to a shop.It has new gaskets so i know someone was in there and The kid i bought it from listed the ebay link where he got the motor from but of course its not done right. Been having crap luck on ebay lately

I have seen this quite a few times lately. Take the clutch cover off & the clutch basket. There are small ratchet paws that turn the shift drum. One turns the drum to up shift & one to down shift. I bet the spring Is broke In the one paw, not letting the shift drum turn to down shift.
