View Full Version : Custom Machine Work.

Hey, really great news for us Trike Types. Remember a long time ago when I started my project ATCR, I had a friend who was going to do all my machine work....? Well, his wife ended up getting cancer...2 different types at the same time no les....and things were just not that important for me to bother him. Well.....fast forward almost a year and now she is doing MUCH better. Not out of the woods, but things are looking ok. He was in the process of starting his own shop, and now he can get back at it. He just bought his first CNC and it is being delivered next week. It will take a week to get it all wired....setup and such, then OFF to the CAD Computer. He has the full boogie software ($12K) and is looking for work.
This is where YOU all come into this story. We need input on what parts you guys would want for your 3 wheelers. Now, he isn't looking to get REAL technical at first. That means no side cases, cool heads or engine parts...ya get it. What he IS going to be making.....triple clamps for converting a motorcycle to a 3 wheeler...like mine, but more advanced. He was over tonight for a few hours and we drew up some new designs and went over a bunch of stuff I think will make these MUCH better. I also realized alot of guys can't, dont want, or flat out think it is not a good idea to convert a bike, so we are gonna be making some clamps to just put INVERTS on a ATC250R. They should be real easy to do.
The other things we have thought of.....small billet pieces......handlebar risers, one piece handlebar clamps, E-Brake Block-offs, throttle covers and the best part...they can all have 3 wheeler logos on them....say OTC, FTC, ATC, ATCR, T3, TRI-Z...you get the idea.
Ok, the reason for this thread....I need input. What items would you guys BUY? Not what you think is COOL, but would actually spend money on? Like I said before...nothing too complex as he is trying to get things rolling and would like to keep prices down. We figure a pair of triple clamps for the inverts or for a conversion....$250-$350. Not 100% set on the pricing. The first set will be getting done as soon as the CNC is up and running. They will go on my ATCR for testing. I want to make sure the RAKE and steering is gonna be good this go round. Can't sell junk! Also, That isn't polished like mine, but for some additional $$$$ that could be arranged! LOL! (these will have the lower clamp gull-winged, pinch bolts facing outward and the top will look more like my original design with the sweet looking cutouts) :naughty:
Feel free to toss out some ideas. We want to try to concentrate on 3 wheeler stuff for now because everyone and their brother is punchin out stuff for ANY brand Quad, but very hard to find nice stuff for Trikes. I am getting all excited again about my Trike! :w00t:
Billy, If I can get permission from you....(and or anyone else I need if from) to use the 3ww Logo.....we can make some stuff up like that too. I am gonna post this up over at .org too, and see about what Dan thinks.

Well I am going to be attempting the trike conversion on my older '95 CR250 steel framer. What are you running on your ATCR? Dont you have the inverted forks but width enough for a 200X wheel and tire? If so I would be interested because I already have a mint aluminum wheel and tire with new tread from a 200X...

I have a 350X front wheel/tire on mine and there is plenty of width for it. I believe a 200X hub is nearly the same, so should be just fine. If you do your own measurements, the clamps can be made to your specs...but MAKE sure on the measurements as if you get em wrong....can't help ya out....they your babies! LOL!!! Once the original program is done, the specs can be "tweaked" here and there for slight variations in application, without much hassle.

I would buy master cylinder cover, probably pay up to $50 if you could put my name on it:). You could do the inline water coolers, i know they are out there but I would rather send the money to a guy that is a trike supporter. If he is going to be doing more than machining i would buy a grab bar for a tri-z also. Also adjustable suspension parts for all trikes, lots of guys want the option of adjustability. That is about all that I can think of right now, but i will go look over the Z and see whatelse I can find.

That all sounds good to me. So you do use the inverteds with the X wheel though right? Thanks for your help!

Hmm. I'll definately have to think about this and see what I want to spice up my R when I redo it. I would LOVE some custom billet parts..
And also.. you could do some performance exhaust flanges. They are $45 plus shipping on eBay.. if you could match or beat that price, I'm sure you could sell them on eBay and us trikers would rather buy from him than eBay as well.
i would like to buy a crhome handle bar clamp that says tri-z or z 250 on it,to replace the little bar clamps that are stock.also front brake ressie covers that said the same thing.that would be cool. i will have to round up some coin though.

Oh and maybe some ATC sized footpegs for us ATCRers with cutouts that say ATC or Honda or something. Shifters maybe? By the way is there a NYTC? :D

The possibilities are endless. You could make billet castle nuts (i know I would like some more bling on my wheels than just the stupid stockers), shifters, brake pedal, rezzy covers, throttle housings, maybe even some nice hubs out of a high grade aluminum or steel or something..
Dammit!

Light weight front wheel hubs for the sport trikes would be a good one.
There's already plenty of people making them but billet exhaust flanges are a nice item and appear to be easy to make.
Brake block offs would be cool with the ATC, Yamaha pitch fork and/or Tri-Z logo.
Thumb throttle covers are another easy one. I have one that I bought for a TRX on ebay that actually is missing two small holes that the trike throttle housing has. Easy to fix (cut off the pins on the throttle housing) but if someone made one for the trike that bolted right on I'd rather have those in the future.
Brake resevoir covers.
I'm definitely planning on putting inverts on my R at some point. Can't commit to when but if someone had a bolt on solution to do that conversion I'd be very interested in a few months (hopefully... damn job change). Custom triples with a quad type handlebar mount (they're closer together than a trike I believe) would give us more handlebar options.
Some of the misc. bushings and what not that are discontinued would be nice to have available. Swingarm bolts and the like as well.
Radiator screens to replace the plastic ones would be cool as long as they flow plenty of air. Some of the ones I've seen on quads... I can't see how they don't cause a rise in operating temperature.
Brake levers, gear shifters, kickstarters etc.
Fork caps! You know those black plastic caps that 250r's and Tri-Z's have that like to fall off? Yeah those things.

The modified linkage needed to run a 350x shock on a 200x, I know someone on here had a few but that was a while back and there weren't many of them.

Craig.... let's talk. Definately inverts in my future, just trying to figure out which forks to use.

How about flat track parts for '83-85 200x? Like wide larger front forks and triple clamps. And possibly rims for a larger, shorter front tire? Id love to be able to set up a factory style 200xer some day. Lets make it happen! :beer

Craig, absolutely put me down for a set of triple clamps if it comes to be!! I like the idea about bringing in the rake a little for better turning on the bike conversions.....

im in for a set of billet 250R cases!
You guys that are getting into CNC machining of custom components, give me a shout by email or PM as I can provide 3D CAD design services. I have years of experience in real-world 3D design for manufacturing. I've got lots of ideas for 3-wheeler parts and coupled with the right person with a shop we could go crazy. :Bounce :beer
I also have an 85 Tri-Z, 85 ATC250R, 86 Tecate and a great knowledge of 84/85 KXTS. Also have the factory service manuals so references for parts is not a problem.

This is a computer operated mill, not an automated pipe bender / cutter / welding outfit!!:wondering
Any thoughts about 350X inverts anyone???? I would be interested in that. Also custom throttle covers and brake ressies with personalized logos - If he can do it - I have cash in hand! Keep us updated on when we can place orders - or when you get more setup.

Lmao, your not gonna buy one, so why ask?
Thinking of ideas that only suit individuals is not really practical as the time into the programming would be too much. Its needs to be items that will sell in numbers.
I like the ideas of throttle covers, ressie tops, invert tripples and the like ;)

Billet 350X footpegs...yeah I need those...my boots don't slide off the peg nearly enough now...;)
Good ideas all...for the alum parts at least.
They aren't a full fab shop. Just a guy with a CNC and experience.
I've offered my X for creating templates for stuff if he'd like to do it that way. I'd imagine having the part that will be replaced "in-hand" would be the best way to create a new part.
I hope this works out. I've known the guy for about 20 years (since I was a youngster), he's a good guy.
Cross fingers and wish for the best.

Its not a problem to put inverts on anything if you can make the tripples.
I'll think of some stuff and see what I can come up with. I have to save some stuff for my own little business though :)

I agree with Dammit! on the throttle covers. 450r Exhaust Adaptors. Maybe heat shields for 350x.
seat pans for atc 90 110s and 125m???? theyre super hard to findred rider,if you need a nice 110 frame i have 3 here that are in good shape.they are 82 and 84 models.i also have a bunch of other 110 stuff from those bikes. i will let you have a frame cheap.you will probaly pay more for shipping than want i want for them.20 bucks each.if no one buys them by winter they are going to scrap.hey craig,if you need a set of tri-z triples,to mock up the handle bar clamps i can send you a set.i like dammits idea too of the little caps for the tops of the forks.i would like to see those done too.

Although alot of these ideas aren't realistic, it's pretty neat reading this thread and seeing all the suggestions.
I like the idea of the mid-pipe to use the 450R muffler on the 350X. That's not a CNC deal, but still a cool idea. Triples for inverts seem to be popular. The hard part will be finding forks for all of them. Then getting springs heavy enough for all the forks! I'd say CR85 forks would probably work great for most of the 350X conversions.
One other suggestion I would have is a Billet side cover for the Z. The stockers tend to break alot from the kicker.

custom swingers would be cool, and i would jump on triples that would work with inverts
cragster
07-15-2006, 04:48 PM
Im pretty sure the Tri-Z guys would like better footpegs for jumping. I remeber seeing a thread about it a while ago...
There are alot more things but i dont want to mention them becuase they are still available on quads..like wheelspacers, shifters, brake pedals
