Recently when looking to buy an 84 250R from Dammit! in Arizona I found a cool service. I really liked what I saw and heard about the R but the cost of shipping made the deal not worth it. Luckily, on a random search, I found a web site called uShip.com. The idea of the web site is to link shippers around the US directly to the customer.
I started reading about this uShip and decided to give it a try. Registration was snap and soon I was making a post. Basically you make an ad (no fees) explaining what you have, where it's at, where it's going and when you need it done. This ad is also the place to list any special instructions too so that potential shippers can properly bid your shipment.
Once the ad is up you'll then start getting bids from shippers. Each shipper has a feedback rating and a profile. I highly recommend using these tools because this is an ebay owned site. If you had a major problem I suspect they wouldn't step in. I placed my ad on the 4th of July and to my surprise I had instant response.
Communication is dealt with using a reply system that keeps your identity private until you choose a shipper. Questions and responses are placed on your ad page for everyone to see. I received a bid from a man that lived in my area and was currently in AZ. I checked his feedback and his profile and they looked pretty good. He hadn’t been in the system too long but I had a good feeling about him. After some negotiations he agreed to ship the trike, 2 extra sets of rear tires, and a couple extra items for $300. I was offered $269 by another shipper but my talks with the shipper I chose made me feel ok spending the extra $30.
So now with the $300 offer to ship all this stuff door to door the trike purchase became doable for me. I accepted the offer and immediately we received each others information, full names, phone numbers, and addresses. I called Rhett, my shipper, and he was happy to talk about the details. Rhett was basically a "holeshot" shipper that only does shipments like cars and ATV's.
I have to admit, I was a little nervous about the service so I keep in strong contact with Rhett. He told me his plan from day one and followed though. He met with Dammit! at his house later that week and picked up the trike and parts. 5 days later I was riding the trike around the back yard. Needless to say I was very happy.
Now I hinted towards a couple things earlier and I'll point them out again. First of all, I took a chance and tried this service. I've only used it once but I had great luck. The only way to leave feedback is to complete a transaction so for the most part that system should be legit. As I understand it is an Ebay owned company so I wouldn't expect to have anyone step in if there was a problem. From what I've seen a lot of these shippers are licensed and registered in some form or another and had I let my ad go longer then half a day I probably would have had a lot more offers to choose from.
I will use this service again. Maybe next time I won't be so anxious and give it some more time but it sure was sweet how fast things did move. If any of you choose to use it, I wish you the same luck.

Oh.... I should also add that all fees for using uShip are paid by the shipper. The price you pay for the total service is what the shipper quotes you.
