Hey, I was wondering if I can do this and if there are any advantages to it. I thought the R would probally have better suspension but I heard theres a problem with tapered bearing races? Thanks for any help.

I have wanted to do this conversion myself but havent had time to do so. one thing you are gonna have to look at is the steering neck on the frame. if you take the whole front end off of you X and knock the old bearing races out you can measure the diameter of the steering neck race and see if an 83-86 250R tapered bearing race will fit in there. Another way to figure out that problem is to see if the 200X tapered bearing conversion kit is the same ans the 83-6R's kit. if either of those work out for the good, problem one is solved.

the other thing that has to be looked at is the steering stems themselves. I know for a fact that the 83R's steering stem can be removed from the lower triple tree. as for the 200X I dont know, if it is then you need to measure the two stems to see if they are the same length. if they are the same your golden, if not see what it takes to use the 200X stem in the R's lower tree.

the last thing to look at is front end travel. do you want that extra inch or so of travel or are you going for the less flex and dive from a beefier front end with stock 200X travel. if you want the extra travel, rebuild the forks and be done and ride happily. if your wanting the beefier front end with stock 200X travel you are going t o have to put a spacer in your forks when you rebuild them. your gonna have to find the travel difference between the two front ends. once that is done make a spacer out of PVC pipe to that length, make sure the spacer is completely clean and de-bured before using it. now when you rebuild your forks the spacer is gonna go over the damper rod before it is install in the upper fork tube, from there finish rebuilding your forks the way your service manual tells you to.

I have a 84r front end on my 200x, I couldn't be happier. I used a 350x tripple and I used the existing ball races. The part numbers for 83-87 200x and 85/86 350x tapered bearings are the same. I tried the tapered bearings on another 350x tripple and I couldn't get the bottom one to work, I did use the top bearings though. I will tell you the 84r front end turns faster while the 86 200x one felt as it had more high speed stability.

I might just keep my front end then. I do love the rake of my 200X. Its like a chopper. :D
