View Full Version : Biggest 3 wheeler race of the year, just 2 days away!!!

The stage is set More racers in one class than ever before!

If you ever wanted to see what it was like in 1986 when trikes ruled the tracks, then get your butt to Smith Road Raceway this Labor day!

Don't miss your shot at the fastest Trike racers in America!!

It's about time to get our group together for another trip to Smith Road. Labor Day is the last race of the season and i'd really like to see 10-12 trikes there.

So far this year we've managed to get 7 and 8 trikes there on seperate occasions and it's quite spectacular. There are people actually coming out to the races now specifically to see us race.

This track is by far the easiest track to start your racing career on. It's an old school track from the early 70's with lots of elevation changes and not much for jumps. Every jump out there can be rolled over and still keep you in the middle of the pack. This is the safest track you could ever race on.

If you have a 200X, 350X, T-3, Any year R, or Z these trikes are proven to be competitive. If you can pitch your trike sideways in 3rd gear you can hang at this track!

This is also a good time to get some great action shots of you racing your 3 wheeler. Mike from Motolenz (out TF photographer) will be there snapping shots again this time.

You can mapquest to Medina Ohio for travel arrangements and/or distance from your place.

Join in this thread if your interested in running in one of the best 3 wheeler races this year!

You know TimJr and I will be there. TimJr is looking for some competition on his 200x. You dont need to be a top form racer, or be on a race trike to have the time of your life. Dont feel you have to battle the guys in the front to have a good time.

I may be in on this one!! Anybody have admission / race fees? Do I need a CRA card or anything like that? Also, what about tethers?

Thanks!
Tim

Derrick Adams
08-14-2006, 11:57 AM
Brian, I've never seen anyone camping in the pits, but i'm sure we can figure out sleeping arrangments for you. Looks like your just under 5hrs away, so your probably looking at $100 in fuel roundtrip + a vacation day on tuesday. Hope you can make it. I really wanted to run with you at TF.

Tim, the cost is $10 admission and $20 for the first class, $15 for any additional classes. Well worth it! Tim your not even 3hrs from the track. That's a no brainer! Careful though, because this track is addictive.

Tether switchs are required. I've never had mine checked and even raced my 350X without one, so whatever.

atctim
08-14-2006, 12:20 PM
Cool!! So, who lives close to the track that is able to put myself and my G/F up for the night? I'll bring the beer! Where do all you racers stay?

This is a no-brainer and I WILL be attending - no more arm-chairing for me:p

Also - she (the G/F) is thinking of running her Auto-X - is there a practice day?

Kintore
08-14-2006, 12:20 PM
Hey brandon, just looking on mapquest.

Think you could meet us at Findlay? Its a better drive for us then. Take 401 in canada, then I 75 south for 100 miles then take 1 exit and get into Findlay.

What say you?

Derrick Adams
08-14-2006, 04:36 PM
There is no practice day, however they have quad practice at 8:00am sharp on race day. Generally can get in 5 or so laps. Tim, is your girlfriend experienced on her trike?

So you can practice, but only if you have a quad??? Or is this open to quads and trikes at 8am. Regarding my G/F, she will determine to race : or not to race after practice.

3leggeddog
08-14-2006, 07:14 PM
well josh, depends on when you are coming in.findlay is an hour north of me,no biggie, but i do gotta work,so give me your arrival time, and we'll figure something out.

the run practice in sessions, big quads, little quads, big bikes, little bikes.she should be fine on this track.the only thing being that she knows to not weave,or crisscross in traffic.thats when you get hit.hell, tell her to give it a shot.

So you can practice, but only if you have a quad??? Or is this open to quads and trikes at 8am. Regarding my G/F, after some more discussion, she is not ready to race yet. She may be by next year though!

We practice with the quads. Ironically we were called "3 wheeler quads" at the Faircross.

I think your gf would be fine to race. Keep in mind, it will only be 3 wheelers on the track at this time. That means it will just be us. If she is on an auto x, when the gate drops she will probably lag the pack anyways, maybe battle TimJr or maybe we will get a few other beginners too, but the fast guys will shoot on ahead, and battle each other way out front, and not be mixing it up with her. Even on a fast trike, an inexperienced rider will probably fall behind before the first corner. Also, the track is so long that it is highly unlikely she will get lapped by the fast riders, so she will have a fun safe race, on one of the safest tracks around. I think if she goes and doesnt race, she will probably regret it after watching it.

A few quesitons regarding the Smith Road Raceway Labor Day event:

#1 Will anyone be riding on Saturday evening or Sunday anywhere near Medina?? I thought a nice trail ride may be in order. Who lives near there? Is there any place to ride?

#2 Are there hotels in or near Medina? Is this a real rural area like Laurel IN, or is it a little biger town?

#3 Head Count?????

Thanks Guys~

Derrick Adams
08-17-2006, 05:06 PM
#1) No real riding areas that I know of. I think most of the guys are planning a Wellsville ride for the weekend then heading over there for Monday. That's what we did last year too.

#2) The town is bigger than Laurel but I don't believe there are any hotels there. The Highway is not too far away from there, though. I know Brandon and Jason stayed out there last time.

#3) As of right now I can think of 10 riders of the top of my head that will be there. I look to see 12-15 there (Hopefully!)

I would come out with my 86 200x but i would rather be on something fast i don't want to be at the back of the pack :). Have fun can't wait to see some pictures.

Its too bad you would let where you think you would place cheat you out of a great time. TimJr just turned 12, and continuously goes out there and rides his heart out on an 84 200X against the few top riders in the country, because no one of his level will compete against him. MX is about the rider, otherwise we have an awful long list of people who are going to be in the front of the pack. The purpose of all this racing is not to humilate somebody for lack of experience or for trike size, because anyone who has the courage to show up is a winner and highly respected by all. TimJr probably gets more respect than any of us because what he does requires a lot more courage than what we do. The purpose is to experience the incredible fun of something that will not likely be around long, before it is gone. Otherwise all those years of my running alone in the back of the pack against quads, when no one else would join me was pointless.

I wouldnt count on opportunities for "next year". They may not be there, The owner of Smith Rd Raceway is well into his upper 70's, and when he is gone the track is gone too. It only exists now due to "grandfathering" in local zoning.

Again, Ill say to all, if you are even remotely considering racing, do it now, or by the time you decide you are fast enough and have a good enough trike, and are ready to try the experience, the opportuinity may very well have passed and you will regret it for the rest of your life.

We took a lot of spectators with us to the Blackwater 100, but only a few of us actually raced. The others kept saying "maybe next year". 13 years later, where I have photos, program rosters, memories and stories, they have regrets and can only say "I watched one once". Which story would you prefer to tell your kids and grandkids?

Do it now. It may not be here tomorrow.

I have a helmet cam, but the problem is that the only recording device I have is the camcorder, and its just too big, bulky, and heavy to strap to me in an MX. If somebody has a compact DVC with RCA video input jacks, I would be happy to get some up close video. Otherwise, my camcorder is available if anybody spectating would like to record.

Tim, is this what you would call an armchair racer?

Seriously if you can't hang with an 86 200X you really shouldn't be on the track anyhow. Did you ever hear about the kid at TF`05 that dominated the 350X class on a 200X? He also beat half the 250's at Sunset Ramblers.
Garageboy34 took the overall win on a 200X at a Harescramble once, against 450s! It's all about the rider.:beer

Never had this issue before so it's prolly dirt or someting. She say's she has considered it seriously but I can't push her over the edge.

I know I would be intimidated by a barely 12 year old kid on a total stock 200X if I was GROWN WOMAN!

I think maybe it never broke up before on WOT because maybe she never hit WOT before!

Okay, now that i have tried to shame her in to racing, you might not have a carb issue, especially if it never did it before. Start with a clean plug, get it fired up, and then start revving it while poking around with some aimed water from a hose, around the coil, plug wire, and plug boot. When insulation properties break down, you get higher rpm arcing from the plug boot or plug wire. Usually you cant see it, but as soon as the affected area gets wet, it will spit and sputter like crazy. The $2 spark plug boot is a very common failure.

atctim...no inside joke here, just lookin' to blow a raspberry at Tim Sr. for his earlier comments. All in good clean fun of course.:beer

Rob...as for pushing the drunk guy into the trailer...I have to ask...Why not? I got such joy out of it last time, think that may have been the highlight of my weekend:lol:
If you won't let me do it I will just have to find someone else to sneak up behind you and do it for me! Besides any of us who were there know you are just using me as a scapegoat cause your drunken arse couldn't stand up straight:lol:

Whew, Rick and I are gonna be in big trouble cause I know we are gonna stop at Taco Bell on the way to Wells also. Taco bell before and after? OMG! Hope you have a strong septic system guys!
Speaking of that, anyone have a way to rig up a travel T-P holder so Rick doesn't have to chase the T-P down the trail this time? That was some funny stuff.

When it comes to racing let me be serious here for just a moment. This is something I have STRONGLY considered, and I still toss the idea around on a daily basis. Just not positive as to wether it is a good idea or not. Just as I was thinking I might do it the bike started running crappy...can you say take a hint? J/K I am just not sure as to wether or not my skills are honed enough to get myself out there. That is just the simple truth. No silly excuses here guys. Wether I was to get out there and race or not you can count on me to be there cheering you on.

Oh, and BTY I will be bringing the first aid kit as usual. Anyone else think of ths yet? With this many racers, we may need more than one. Lets hope not.

Also, I should mention thanks for the advice on the problem with my trike Tim. Tried what you said yesterday and it doesn't appear to be the problem, but it was sure worth a try. Regardless, I went to the local bike shop and I got a new plug boot coming. We tore things apart yesterday and found a couple of potential problems. Forgive me for not having the proper termonlolgy. First took the carb off and found some gunk down in a jet, got that cleaned out. Rick adjusted the valves, the front one was way out of wack. Put her all back together and still the same problem. Rick adjusted the carb needle, still no change. Thinking we have an air/fuel type issue. When you crank the idle up she acts like she wants to straighten up. Think we are gonna need a little help with the tweeking to get her just right.

Oh and Tim I have been reluctant to say this but in good fun you've got it coming.
The reason I ride like a girl is because my brain didn't travel south to just below my belt line; only to seperate itself into two sacks where it gets all common sense rattled out of it by the vibration of the tank and seat!!!!!

(Rob...as for pushing the drunk guy into the trailer...I have to ask...Why not? I got such joy out of it last time, think that may have been the highlight of my weekend:lol:
If you won't let me do it I will just have to find someone else to sneak up behind you and do it for me! Besides any of us who were there know you are just using me as a scapegoat cause your drunken arse couldn't stand up straight:lol: )

hey,at least i was making a effort to stand.everyone else was passed out in a chair,on a bike, or on the ground.lol

i will call rick 2 nite.we will see what we can figure out on your 200x.maybe get her goin good for this weekend or the race.

Can anyone ensure we get video footage of these races. We may never get this many racers together again. I'd like to have someone at the front of the track and someone at the back. Hopefully we can get that footage into the hands of a good video editor.

My father said he will run one video camera from one side. The camera is VHS only (I think) hope that's not a problem. He is pretty good with cameras - ie angels, pans and the such!

Any video would be good but it would be sweet if you guys could get alot of good video of the races and then have someone put it all together to make it look mint. Then post it on Google video and http://www.youtube.com/
This way yoyu all can show the worl that there are still people that love 3 wheelers and allso race them. It would be sweet to show off your skills to alot of people who just plain dont get riding 3 wheelers let alone race them. Make us proud guys.

Allso, why does all the cool 3 wheeler stuff happen ion Ohio? I wish it was like that here in N.Y.

DOH!!!! Thats why I need Mrs Moshman to add some extra seat padding up there for me!

I can undertsand not wanting to be mixing it up on the track with limited experience, and all I can suggest is to hang back a little, (which will probably happen by the first corner anyways) and ride the track at your own pace and consider it practice laps. This track is long, so it is highly unlikely the fast guys will lap you, so you wont be mixing it up with them. I do understand how intimidating it can be, especially with some of the faster guys, but It spreads out quickly on a big track like this, and you are pretty much racing against yourself, or maybe some of the others who are in your range. The fast guys will be way out front and out of sight for you. The track is big and wide, so you dont get tangled unless you trying some daring pass moves or something. Just ride at the pace you feel comfortable. The group of raiders all bunched up in the first corner doesnt stay that way past that first corner. After that they spread out in clumps of two or three. This is also the safest track for beginners, because there is very little in the way of jumps. Its much safer than the stadium type tracks. Memorial Day was TimJrs first race ever in an adult class, which he did at Smith, and I felt very relaxed and comfortable about his safety there.

Wouldnt It be the coolest thing if you raced. You would go down in history as the ONLY hot girl to ever race a 3 wheeler in the mens class. That would feel pretty good if you ask me. Ive never heard, seen, or read about any other chick racing a true race on 3 wheels. Yeah baby.

Guys have sack, girls have rack. Let them puppies swell down to your knees. Velkro them doggies to the front fender and just roost that clutch. VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!:be er
