I stripped my R down the other day and now I am sanding/wire-wheeling my 85R engine. After that I am going to give her a fresh coat of paint! But what should I use???? And how many coats??? Any other tips you have from expierence would help also!:beer

I was thinking that high heat paint on the cylinder by the way.....

Thanks!

to truely do it right you should disassemble the entire engine. I had my cases and side covers powdercoated, and the cylinder bead blasted, and it looked very nice.

Regular paint won't last long due to having fuel and oil spilled on it.

i would not have attempted to do it like that. the wire brush is gonna take forever and youll probably ruin your drill trying to do the whole thing. it should be taken apart and blasted, then painted. im not trying to be negative, but i doubt youll even get all the paint off that way

I see what you two are saying, the evidence is right in front of me!!! But I simply do not want to go through the aggrivation of taking apart the engine at this moment in time.......... I know a wire brush won'y romove all the paint, i'm just trying my best to get the loose stuff off. The stator cover and clutch cover (over the round parts) I'm gonna try and keep metalic, no paint because it just wears from you boot rubbing on it.......

all this makes me wonder why honda ever painted the blocks back in the first place??? They didn't for the 88 and 89 years though right??? They should have just left them metalic...........

i believe the 88/89 cases were painted black. the 86/87 cases were painted silver and the 85 was also black.

Oh ok........ Just makes you wonder why they would bother painting them??? It's not like they can rust so why bother? It is just gonna chip off eventually..... :wondering
I have to go to the honda dealer in a little while, I'll ask them for their 2 cents....

use some aircraft paint stripper.

I use the duplicolor engine paint. The semi gloss black looks close to the factory black .Its oil and gas resistant and paints good. When your boot wears it off smooth it out with some steel
ool or a scotch brite and repaint the worn part.Paint stripper would work good just dont get any on any rubber or plastic.

You can go down to autozone or checker auto parts and they have some nice black engine paint for this use. Yes it is better if the engine is apart but you can do a quality job if its still together. Just make sure you mask off the bolt heads and wires so you dont get paint on them. And you dont have to strip it to the bare metal, just get some wet/dry sand paper and lightly go over it. Put on serveral light coats of paint and she'll be looking hot!!!!

Heres mine with the Dupli-Color Low Gloss Black engine enamel....spray it with about 2 coats of the Grey Engine primer....then 2 or 3 coats of Black, or Cast Coat Aluminum if it was originally that color.
Here's a link to my project with more pics, colors and numbers I used. Look at the very last post in the thread. http://www.3wheelerworldforums.com/showthread.php?t=55562

Has anyone stumbled across the right factory matching paint for the 86-87 250r motors? The silver honda used is unique.

I spent alot of time degreasing and prepping the surface, the only spot where the regular satin black paint has even been affected is right on the exhaust flange where it gets hottest, the rest has been fine.

As for boot wear, im sure that over time there will be some, but I think a little boot wear on a motor looks better then a poorly polished one.

pj1 engine paint holds up to 500 degrees and gas and oil do not harm it in anyway.

The pj1 is like $8 a can, plus shipping if you get it from DK.....Dupli-Color is available at any auto parts store(for like $4), its also fuel and oil resistant and good up to 500 degrees......Just my 2 cents ...:Bounce
