That is correct. 10/40 motor oil.
I use the Valvoline or Castrol 10/40.
Don't put in synthetic though or you risk clutch slippage.

There are 2 different Rotella oils available. A synthetic 5w-40 and non-synthtic 15w-40. Both are very good oils, and are actually rated for motorcycle/atv wet clutch applications. I run Rotella in most of my machines with great results.

Also there is the standby ATF type F for exteme use in 2 stroke gearboxes.

Yeah. Manufacture made the bike. They should know. Plus on my R, the gear oil is changed every other ride so I am not throwing money away on bel ray.

Isnt that a bit of overkill to change the oil that fast.

I change mine about every 6-8 rides. Depends if im busy, or how long the rides are.

If you use regular oil,you should change it all the time!Get some gear saver, and be safe, this stuff is great and breaks down way slower than the others!!The way I can tell its better, is if you put fresh regular oil in,ride it 1 day, then change it,it will look like water. If you do the same with gear saver,it's still like it should be!!

duh, wtf are you guys on? use 80 or 90 wt gear oil. honda makes tranny oil that is 90 wt specifically for 250r's and cr dirtbikes, they come in the liter bottles at the dealer, other than that you can just get some decent 80 or 90 wt gear oil. that is what is supposed to be run in a GEARBOX, not a whole motor, which motor oil is used for.

I run 80w bel ray and love the stuff..change it about every 10 hours or after a few really good hard rides, clean oil = a happy motor!

I use 10-40, that is what Honda recomends. And If a good 10-40 can last 3,500 mi in a Gas car engine, I am sure it will last in a ATC 250r for a few rides.

Synthetics have had no ill affects on any of my Honda's Clutches.

80w-90w seems awfull thick.

Honda also says to use 20:1 on your pre-mix, do you?!

20:1 performs flawlessly in my 250R's...Seems like oil is right up there in heated discussion topics such as religion or politics!! hahaha

I think we are talking Gear Oil here??? It has allready been beat to death why know one uses 20:1 for there premix. Same reason why there is know reason not to use 10-40 in the gear box. Todays Oil is alot better then it was in the 80's.

I use 10-40 synthetic. Works just fine. I don't see how 80w-90w gear Oil would be any better.

Yes the car motor oils are different from today than early years. They are extremely low friction and too "slippery" for an atv or motorcylce with a wet clutch plate system. The oil manufacturers do not take this into account when they are developing there additive packages. Synthetic car oils are the worst on clutches. There is absolutely nothing wrong with these oils except for the fact that they cause premature clutch plate wear/slipping. All of the big 4 manufacturers have service bulletins on this topic.

There are a few automotive oils that do meet the requirements of a wet clutch. Many of the diesel oils such as Delo or Rotella for example. Also some of the racing formulas of Castrol or Valvoline.
The main ingredient in Honda's HP 2 stroke gear box oil is ATF type F. Yamalube 2R is the same formula today as when it came out in the 70's.
