I have an '82 185S that starts first crank religiously. I have an '81 that hasn't been starting. I took the stator plate, ignition coil and plug wire, CDI box off the 82' and put it on the '81. It won't start using the recoil but if you give it a quick push and pop it in gear it will take right off within 5 feet. If it runs for a minute and I shut it off it will then start using the recoil, usually first pull. If I let it sit overnight and go out again and try it won't start using the recoil again. Any suggestions on what might be causing it to not start by cranking it when it's cold? I unplugged the wires coming from the stator and it tested out to about 245-250 which is about what it is suppose to be I guess.

Check the valve ajustment to make sure it has the right clearence , i had a 185s that had the same problem as yours and the intake valve was ajusted to tight .

Yeah the carb is off the '82 as well and works fine as does the choke. I took the '81 off because the spring broke off the choke. I'd like to find a replacement carb I've been watching Ebay and saw one go the other day for $115 which was more than I just paid for an '83 185s that runs. Thanks for the advice guys.
