View Full Version : How often do YOU get flak for owning a trike?

Everytime I mention that I own/operate a three wheeler, I catch total hell. Followed shortly by the phrases, "I thought those were outlawed', "Those are dagerous", or "I know (fill in the blank) that got killed on one of those" . Actually, all of their responses make me want to own more trikes!:D

I dont sweat it at all when people give me crap. My dad tells me "they quit maken those for a reason, their unstable Eric." My father would never understand this obsession.

Some people who where injured while riding trikes the situation was unavoidable, then the rest that I personally know of were silly errors. People not wearing helmets, or doing stupid crap.

Its the rider, not the ride.

What comforts me is that I could smoke them on their quads!!!

personally I like fixing these thing, more so than hauling it out and riding them, I do play with them in the alley and cul de sac, but yeah everytime someone asks what im tinkering with. I tell them another tricycle (friend at work calls three wheelers that). I get the same response; I thought those were illegal, to own/sell, theyre dangerous. etc. another freind at work owns a utility quad and I hear almost everyone in the family has fallen off the thing, or run into cactus etc. maybe those folks are the kind that shouldn't own a trike, if you cant sit on 4 wheels you sure shouldn't be on 3. Yeah i get crap like that all the time also, but if theyre on a quad just say 'at least I dont have that extra training wheel' or 'im glad i dont have an extra wheel to slow me down. :w00t:

I got a 83 atc200 and if i race my friends 06 grizzley 400 its a really even race. But they cant do wheelies for crap on it.

my friends here always ask me 'when are you gonna get rid of them 3 wheelers and get a quad like us?"and my response is why...you have broken your leg, collar bone, wrist, and back, your wife has broken her leg.you have had these" coffee tables with wheels" for only a few years and they are very unstable obviously.i have rode my 3 wheelers for 22 years with no problems or broken bones!!!!and besides i know your just sick of seeing my fat ass in front of you all the time,so shut the F... up!!!:beer ...lol

I have a friend of mine that just upgraded from a blaster to a Z400. He a few other guys upgraded at the same time and said, Tyler, its time for you to upgrade too...get somethin that has enough wheels to keep up...so I sold my 350x and got an R. I caught even more crap for gettin another trike until I made him ride it around on the flats at sand like...first thing he said was,"wow, thats quick!" second was yer crazy...
they dont give me much of a hard time anymore...I think they forget to because Ill fly by em and the back of a threewheeler looks like the back of a quad...either way im in front.

When people tell me that 3 wheelers are unsafe, outlawed, dangerous, or illegal, I normally just hit them back with - "yeah, you are right no one should own them - If you have any, I'll take them off your hands so you can be a safe person!"

I have heard that a lot also. I think trikes make you ride more responsibly because you have to shift your weight, lean, and whatever you gotta do to keep that thing under control. I've seen many lazy guys ride quads around and they never move their *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited* off the seat. I rode with a guy that had a modified 450R that he raced. He looked at my 350X and he said " I'd kill myself on that!!" I guess that makes me feel good because he's a pretty good rider and he's scared of something that I ride all the time. Anyway, another guy I ride with has a Polaris 600 twin.. that only weighs about 700lbs... I mean if you get that on top of you.. you're gonna still be there when they find you. At least with my trike at 320lbs.. I can kick it off of me. People against trikes PI$$ me off and it makes me want to prove to them even more that I can ride even more safely than some particular  unresponsible yayhoo's on a 4 wheeler.

LOL, Our local cop does the same thing. I don't think i've ever caught flak for owning a trike. Alot of people are intrigues by it, and love them around here. All my friends used to like to take turns on my 200x because they were amazed at how easily it could manuver over rocks and logs, and ofcourse, WHEELIES!!!

this bee-otch tried to tell me im screwed if i got cought riding a 3 wheeler "because they are illegal" and her uncle is a cop and has a registered big red. I told her to show me the law that said you cant ride a three wheeled atv. Then this other girl at school tried to tell me they are illegal I just laughed cuz this was comming from a girl who apparently wasnt sure how to use a bar of soap let alone the laws about three wheelers. "But they are illegal because every on and their brother says they are"

if you dads nova runs low 8s in the 1/8 there is no way he is going to trap 140mph in the 1/4. more like 110-115mph

unless he is running skinny honda tires on the rear and smoking them the entire 1/8

Never caught flack but it wouldnt bother me anyway. If I wanted a 4 wheeler, Id buy one. How many people own a small fleet of 4 wheelers? Some, but Id say more own a small fleet of 3wheelers. Theyre half as expensive, but twice as fun!
3wheelers are more of a challenge to maunever as said by shifting body weight, taking hard corners, ect...

Everybody hears the same crap about them being dangerous and illegal, but it's because they have been misinformed by the media. Almost every time I go riding, someone either gives me the thumbs up or comes over to talk about my trike. Even my buddies on their quads think it's cool. And yes, they are cheaper overall.

Great thread......... good to know I'm not alone. Everytime I mention the words "three wheeler" within two seconds the response I always get contains the words, DANGEROUS!, CRAZY!!, ILLEGAL!!!.blah, blah, blah. But when I let one of these people take my trike for a spin they return with nothin but smiles and thumbs up. I have to admit, its a pretty good feelin to be the only one with an atc when everyone else around you is on a quad. Plus, everyone knows you have to keep these babies mantained and usually do your own wrenching to keep em runnin. Most quad owners i know simply change their oil a few times a year and drop off their 4 wheeler at the local shop in the spring for a tune-up........ how much fun is that??? The way I see it is......... you SIT on a quad but RIDE a trike! :beer

I either get the ones that sit and stare at the bike or the ones that immedietly bad moutn the bike. I was on my 200x, a guys showed up on a yfz, he started bad mouthing my bike. I let him get a few laps on the track, I pulled on, passed him on the second lap, and lapped him on the 5th lap. He very quickly packed up and left, he must have felt like a asss!!!!!!! I regularly beat quads on my 200x, and forget my atc250r. Where I ride they know me very good and the staff has told people that bad mouthed my bike to FIRST watch how I ride and see how many quad guys I passed and then le them decide if they want to comment and most have good things to say. I have my complete asses of some people that bad mouthed my bike. About 2 years ago, I new yorker on a banchee, bad mouthed my bike, saying that he bets I flip, crashed, don't jump, slow ass hell, AND I HEARD ALL OF THIS(not realizing I was listening), I passed him, and cleared the next few tabletops, a few laps later passed him again IN-FRONT OF HIS FRIENDS and I pulled off. They ripped him a new one like you can't imagine, I bet that he won't say anything else about a trike again. There is another guy at one place I ride, that nobody gives any flak to. Last time I went to rausch creek, I passed quads, dirtbikes on a 200x and the bike had a bent axle and it wasn't too wide either. I really hate people that say stuff about them without seeing the rider in action first. my friends have alot of respect for me and admit that I really know how to ride a trike good
The comment I get the most reaction to is why people ask me if I own a quad, I do own 2 quads, crf450r hybrid and trx250r(far from stock) and I say that I like my trikes better and have more fun riding them. Most don't know what to thing after that. I heard every comment you can think of about trikes, dangerous, illegal, unsafe, easy to flip, hazardous, banned, not made for 20 years, you will get killed on that. FOR GODS SAKE, I NEARLY GOT KILLED NOT THAT LONG AGO, CROSSING THE STREET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was in the hospital for about 2 months, in a wheel chair for almost 3 months. I really wish people would wake up and smell the mierda(spanish for another word), before they commented about your trike.

Every so often somebody makes one of these threads and I will forever be baffled. I have never been mistreated by a quad rider for being on a trike. I have been treated with nothing but respect, and usually get more respect than the average quad rider from other quad riders. I have found that most quad riders are very curious about trikes, and many of them used to have them. Ive have been trike racing since 1998, most often the only trike on the track, and I have always been treated with decency. I get asked a lot of questions, but out of curiosity. Many of the questions are extremely dumb questions, but they do not ask them to be disresepctful. They ask because they honestly dont know, so I can either respond like a jerk, or I can answer sincerely to the best of my abilities. I can cop an attitude that trikes are better than quads, and they will treat me the same as you would treat them when they take that attitude about trikes. Quads are nothing but modern trikes. We are riding antiques that are curios and relics, so dont be paranoid when people stare.
I have been scoffed at by bikers who dont likw ATVs in general, and Ive seen ATV riders who werent fond of bikers, and its mostly over the different affects that the other has on tracks and trails, but Ive not seen quad riders with a prejudice against trikes. Most see them as something very difficult to master, and most are quite impressed with a rider who has mastered one, and when they say "those guys are crazy" most of us would not take that as an insult, but rather as an honor.
I believe the majority of "quad riders hate us" posts are fabrications from parnoid minds looking for fellow victims to come togther against an enemy that does not exist. In actuality quad riders are our biggest ally against REAL enemies such as CPSC, Treehuggers, Inc., and Enviroweenie libs. I suggest we stay focused on who are real enemies are, and do our best to keep our real friends on our side.

The only time I catch "flak" for owning a trike is in school and once on a poker run where my CDi decided to crap out after 21 years. Guys on quads were yellin "Shouldda bought a quad" and I yelled " yeah and if it was a kawasaki you'd be yelin Shouldda bought a Honda, or if it was a Polaris you'd yell shouldda bought a Yammi. Lets see where your POS is in 21 years my friend." I really get errked by those guys. But other than that most people seem to be in aww that they are actually around.

Most of the quad guys in my area dont seem to want 3 wheelers
around at all, not sure if it's because they think they are outdated
and slow or whatever. And some of these guys quads are real
peices of junk (S##T), much worse shape than my trike.
I just love to ride, with whoever ,wherever.

I guess where I ride is the capital of ignorance. Most of the time I really don't get treated with much respect by quad riders. Both of the times I flipped was because of a: I over-did the turn big time and b: I got too cocky, both were my fault and not the bikes fault.

I have to say that I get nothing but respect from others when I am on the trail with one of my trikes. Last weekend we went riding and everyone from the little kids who never seen one to the fathers on there kx250s were staring at our trikes. Then theres the teenagers who always show off in front of me with wheelieing and burning out - like they have something to prove with their 400s or whatever that mom and dad bought for them. I laugh every time it happens - just happened last weekend.

Other than that I have had many thumbs up or been stopped so they can reminisce (sp) the old days. I even had the cops stop me to talk 3 wheelers - right deepa.

I even sometimes shine up the wheeler and throw it in the back of the pickup and cruise with it around town. When i stop at gas stations and such i usually have someone strike up conversation with me - not a bad comment yet.

I have also read a few of these posts related to this subject and it seems more often than not to be the younger guys who are not educated about these bikes that talk smack. Let them ride it once and they wont talk smack anymore.

Quads are boring - three wheelers are truley unique these days.

It seems to me most of the quad guys have been nice. I can think of several times that the quad guys have stopped in the trails to let ovhonda1 and I cruise on past them. I have always been shown alot of respect from the quad guys. Most of the older guys are quick to come check out the trikes. What I hear most is " Is that a 350x? I always wanted one of those. " As with anything there is always a few bad apples that think they are the shiznit. But I have to agree with Timsr 99% of the quad guys are cool. The people that really get to me is like this guy that owns a MX track. He will allow bikes and quads but no trikes. He told us that there was no place in the united states that would allow trikes on there track. Which I was quickly to point out that In Ohio they still race at several tracks blah blah blah.... anyway to make a long story short. We still cant ride on the track. But if no one is there he said we could sneak on with our trikes but had to leave if anyone on a bike or quad came to practice. Thats the people we need to focus on.

Thats seriously funny.

I don't catch flack about the Tecate. I do hear a lot of misconceptions about trikes like it being illegal to own and ride them. Just yesterday I was told that its dangerous to use front brakes on a trike, that was coming from a airfooler rider.

If anything I get more attention with the trike. When I park with the quads theres always a crowd around me asking questions and being curious. Then when we go riding I'm always leading because everyone wants to watch. I've let a few of my friends ride it and they love it, always saying "I'd love to own that." :TrikesOwn :postwhore :postwhore

I have a love/hate relationship with other riders in our town. Most people who see me mobbing my 110 love it, how I can handle the machine and such, but there are some people who want to race me, especially with bigger utility machines like Kodiaks and such. I say "WTF dude, you want me to have a handicap that big? No suspension and what, 3 times less displacement?" But sometimes I take them up on it and actually win. One time I raced a TRX300 through a set of mud pits and won by a freakin mile, because he had to chug through the pits in 2nd gear, I could cruise over everything in 4th, because the 110 simply didn't sink. Lots of people are impressed by the 110, though, and more people will be impressed with my 110 once it's in a full-suspension 70 frame... :) :naughty:

most responses me and my bro get when out riding the local pit or the lake during winter is wide eyed "you guys are nuts, but them things(trikes) look awesome! can i give it a rip?" and most of the time the answer is "NO" go get your own!!!! and when and if someone wants to talk some smack three words usually shut them up, "line em up!!!" most responses we get are good ones, and when we pull up to the bar while out riding the lake ice it always seems that the snowmobilers and quadders always seem to crowd around our bikes and stare! so its all good. and if they dont like it, well, they can keep thier comments to themselves.

I always get some kind of stupid comments until the race is over then everybody comes and checks it out a little closer.

Last year I went to some grass drags and spanked EVERYBODY there, loaded up and drove to a motocross track, went in to pay my 15 bucks and when I started to unload, the guy comes out and says WHOA WAIT A MINUTE you cant ride that here.
I said why not?
He says they are too dangerous........ and WHY WOULD ANYBODY WANT TO?

Instead of kicking him in the nuts for saying something so stupid, I packed up and left.

Last week we went to the RV park that offers trails, MX quad tracks and motocross tracks. It never dawned upon me until last week to do the (bike) motocross track. (Because ATV's are not allowed to ride there). I scoped the track out and watched the other riders. (Oh,I parked my 250r right at the track entrance too). After I got a good visual of the track I said "WTF". Jumped on my R and did a practice lap. About 3/4 the way around some jumbo jumps out in front of me and points me off. (Not gunna happen). At the start/finish line another jumbo jumps in front of me and points me off. Went around him too. By this time the mx riders caught up to me and were edging me on to ride harder and faster. You know what I mean, shoot dirt in my face, (get me really pissed) , pace me. Couldn't keep up though. By the time I got back to the entrance there were a couple of guys there and a red flag to GET ME OFF. I couldn't blow by them this time. (I might get ejected from the park and have my riding permit suspended if I didn't exit, AWWW poor me).So I made the exit.
Later that day I rode back to the motoX track and one of the riders I was on the track with waved me over. He was Impressed with My R but still had the motoX attitude, which I respect. A couple of riders gathered and it was all good!
Quad riders don't bother me. The only thing I tell them is that I can't jump the table tops as far as they can and hard cornering is more difficult due to the lack of suspention. (4th wheel). I never had a quad rider try an shoot me down. Must be the patch over my eye and my one arm.

Just as a matter of coincidence.............. Last night I was working on my cousin's 200s, and my young sister in law noticed we were working on a 3 wheeler. She wasted no time in telling us about a friend of hers from Ohio (her home state) crashing his old 3 wheeler. "The police came and confiscated the 3 wheeler" she said, "Those things are illegal in Ohio, you are not even allowed to own one". So I just thought I would give you Ohio guys the heads up; those choppers you see circling the sky aren't looking for weed crops, they are really hunting down you three wheeled owning scumbags. You know what really pisses me off is that especially kids at school think that because it has 3 wheeles or should i say three wheeler it is automatically slow. I said my three wheeler feels like it flys down the rode and this kid said a three wheeler cant fly (go fast). Thats why I would like a 250r partialy is because people underestimate 3 wheelers in general. I just want people to scratch their head and say how did he pass my warrior its a 350 and thats a three wheeler. Or my $8000 arti-choke its a 600. The thing that my dad says it dont matter how fast your going or what your riding its the sudden stop that hurts.

The other day i was taking my 350x home after a ride at my buddies, and i pulled up to my dad who was doing hay, and this like 9 year old kid gets out of the tractor and is begging for a ride. So I say alright, (never meet this kid before) and just as we were taking off, and he says ohh this is just like my dads four wheeler, just smaller and slower!.. lmao well that kid got a rude wake up call.. because we have a dirt drive way thats a little more than a 1/4 mile long, and i didnt even get outta 5th cuz i dont wanna hurt him, and on the way back hes hanging on tight and says.... this is nothing like my dads four wheeler.... and when i dropped him off, he was buggin out, he loved it, and kept telling them how fast it was.. lol so mabe i opened another to 3 wheelers.. i can only hope so.

I've been taking my son down to the school bus stop on the wheeler (since he stands there by himself near the main road) He finds it funny that alot of people wave, blow the horn or give us the thumbs up.

Well, the only time I catch any flack is when my 5 year ol son Josh breaks out the Tri Zinge with flat tracks and starts doing donuts and power slides and fish tailing the thing around out on the grave drive beside out house. he also bumps a little air from time to time jumping out driveway. he owns a POLARIS SPORTSMAN 90 and a HONDA Z50R and the TRI ZINGER. But he is a 3 wheeler man at herat. Stephen

Fairly often for me...mostly from elitest dirtbikers that think and believe nothing is able to match their machines. A little bit from some quad guys, but not near as much from the dirtbikers. I'd say probably atleast half of all the dirtbikers I meet have some *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited* to say about the trikes.

Like many others here have said, I get the same two responses from people who see my trikes: "Aren't those things illegal?" and the ever popular "Those things are dangerous!". Lately I've taken to giving them my most wide-eyed crazy look and saying "Well, yeah!" What can they say to THAT?

I just rode down to the store for gas and a Highway Patrol stopped to look at the trikes... turns out he has a couple of reds that he is rebuilding.

i dont get the quad thing. I have owned atcs for many years nad recently bought a quad to see what they were all about i hated it . NO turning radius you have to worry about two front tires up front i always felt like i was gonna hit somethin with a wide front they are a lot heavier if you get stuck you need someone to pull you out and so on well i sold that quad after a couple of months and bought another atc .
