I have had an ongoing problem with my 85 kxt 250.
First off I have a 84 uni trak system with the 84 rod.
I was told by Mik6 a member of the board that the 84 and 85 uni trak systems were different. How so? Would that also that the swingarm is longer, shorter?
The shock that came with my previous 84 model was blown apart and never worked right to begin with.
I had a tecate 4 shock on it but it was 2 inches shorter then the one that "came" with my 84.
When I got the 85 some 5 years ago. The uni trak systek was missing and a bracket was welded so a fixed shock could work.
It did not. I made it a jacked up hard tail.
So now I believe I have a 250 r shock on it now that is a tight fit.
I know dampering and pre load have alot to do with each bike/shock but im only getting 4 inches of travel. Ive tried fabracating an adjustable rod like the ones on the 86-87 models to no prevail.
My tecate 4 shock measured 13 5/8 and the shock that came with the 84 measured 15 3/8 from center of bolt hole the center of bolt hole.
Would I have to fabracate 2 new lower shock mounts to compensate for a longer shock?

Email Cory Sprock at tecatedragracing@yahoo.com .... Tell him you need an 85 Tecate shock. The 84/85 UNI track linkage and rod should be the same. The 84 rod may be a tad shorter if I remember right. Both the 84 and 85 swingarms are the same.

PS, got any pics of your 85?

Im so jelous that you have a number plate.
I was supose to get one through Scotts cycles in Newfoundland.
Do you know of this place?
I have my swinger at a aluminum fabracator.
And I might have to move my lower shock mounts down.

84's Uni-Trak "dog-bone" strut is shorter than 85. If I remember right, the 84's shock is a bit shorter than the 85 and the upper linkage rocker arm is mounted a bit lower in the 84 frame. The swingarms are the same, just different colors.

I guess it was like yours.
Ive seen the white ones and that would go better with my bike.
Scotts cycles some where around the corner brook area.
They have a hunting/fishing camp on glover island.

Oh one more thing. The kx 500 mod you are doing.
Did you find a motor that will bolt up?

No 500 will bolt in but its not that hard to make it fit. The rear motor mounts line up and the bottom of the frame plus the downtube need to be modified.

I want an 89 and up motor (Kawasaki KX500) but I'm looking at a 88 right now just because its available.

Best advice if your looking to do a similar swap is to find an 86/87 Tecate chassis which the KX500 just about bolts into. You may have to remake mounts but the frame won't have to be cut.

Ive never found a 86-87.
Ive tracked down 10 tecates in nova scotia and ive owned 4 of them.
84-85 Tecate 3 and 2 88 tecate 4s.
Found an 84-85 tecate in sydney cape breton.
If I ever found one Id sell everything.

Thats sweet! What about Newfoundland? I've never seen one on the island except mine. Heard stories about there being more but never seen them.

Nope. Too far to travel for parts.
How Long is your shock from center bolt hole to center bolt hole?
