My 85 Big Red's left hub keeps shearing the cotter pin and backing the castle nut loose. The splines in the hub are about gone, as well are the lug studs. Are 85 and 86 hubs the same? Is that about the only thing to do to fix it? I put a bigger cotter pin in this time, and it has held so far.

Thanks

Travis

I would think your hubs would almost have to be spinning on the shaft occasionally to shear the cotter pin off, so my guess is hub splines or axle splines are shot. Is that a chain drive model, or shaft?

85, shaft. The hub splines are shot, the axle still looks good. That's what's backing the castle nut off. Thank goodness the wheel has come off while riding. I think that I have a parts trike found, but haven't got it yet, so maybe I can use the hub off of it.

Also, is the seal on the end of the axle (left side) the only seal between it and the rear diff. I mean, if you tipped the trike on it's left side would the rear diff oil run down the axle tube, and then back in the rear diff when it's level?

Thanks,

Travis

Thanks, I finally found the correct pull down menu on partsfish, and they are different.

The axle splines are still squared off, thankfully, each spline on the hub is rounded off. I sure hope that axle is good, hehe. I think I have a parts trike found, and hope the parts are good on it.

I think I have a pair of hubs from an 86 TRX250 shaft drive, thats why I asked. If they would fit I would part with them VERY cheap.

Thanks for the thought, Tim.

I'm pretty sure the 85 250es and the 85 250sx hubs are the same. You may want to double check the part numbers to be sure.

Travis, I dont have another hub that might work for you, but I will ask Howie to see if he has one. My 86 big red had a problem with the nut going on too much and not even hit the cotter pin. I ended up putting another small washer type spacer in there and it worked for me. Oh and the 85SX hubs are the same as the ES. They changed the rear ends slightly on the 86 models and up.

Thanks, Howdy and Scott, smackkk contacted me, he has a few.

What about my 'seal' question. Are the axle seals at the end of the axle on each side the only ones, or are there seals and races at the rear diff output? I have had quite a bit of metal shavings in the rear diff fluid, and I think they are from the metal being worn off of the hub splines and lug studs, because they are getting past that axle seal toward the rear diff.

Thanks,

Travis
