View Full Version : Loose Clutch-Cause Backwards Shifting???

The other day we push started the ATC110(1980) and got it running. It would only shift DOWN to go through the gears. Neutral was all the way UP.
In a previous post I was told it was probably a broken Pawl. Well when we finally got the cover off the pawl was fine. But the clutch spring was just in the cover rolling around like it came out or just wasn't installed properly.
My question is since the clutch apparently wasn't working right, would this cause the backwards shifting we were having? Or could there be something else thats not assembled right?
This engine is supposed to have a rebuilt top end, and when we pulled the right side cover off everything looks new, gears, shift arm, clutch, etc. or I guess since its always oiled maybe they all look this way?
I ordered a new gasket and will buy new bolts, REAL BOLTS not the damn phillip head bolts that we had to drill to get them out.
By the way, this shifting pattern was in LOW. When in HIGH it would shift into ONE gear and was a real pain getting it back in neutral.
Any ATC110 tranny experts out there?

EDIT: By the way it would only run for a couple of minutes then quit. So the shifting was mainly done when the engine wasn't running.

Yeah every ATC I've had, 250R, 200X, 185S, and my current 250ES, were all either 1st down then all up, or just all up. I've never had one where neutral was all the way up and you shift down. Until now.

Well it was my best friends when we were teenagers. I'm pretty sure it was neutral down and all gears up. It was a long time ago so I could be wrong.
