Did john deere make a 500? If so what was it.

Yup, Deere made a 500, it was powered by a 440 fan cooled Canadian Curtis Wright motor and had a Walbro carb and unless I am mistaken it was a 15 inch track bogie wheel suspension. I think its run was 72-74 for the first generation, then 75-76 for 2nd gen. Good sleds for their time.
