View Full Version : yamaha 125 tri moto SL gear.
my 1st trike was a 198??? yamaha 125 tri moto, there is a gear right below neautral and it was marked SL. is that slow gear? or super low? i was just wondering what that SL stood for. i remembering getting it stuck in the mud, i used it for the first time and the bike went up on its rear wheels and bucked me right off.

My 82 Tri-Moto that I once loved as a kid was not marked "SL". The maunal stated that it was to be used as a super low gear though though for pulling and hill climbing. I always started in 2nd because 1st was really useless. Wow, I cannot remember yesterday, but I remember that from decades ago.

well, I dont think mine has it, but the decal on the plastic is pretty straight forward - it shows an "up" pattern, 1 thru 5.

it is a super low. it was easier to go that route than the hi/lo like honda. the newer ones didn't have it because, i think, they had a lower, low enough, 1st gear.
all i know is that the sl gear is pretty powerful for a 125cc. :D

my first trike ever was a yt125 with that "super low" it was a tork monster. i tried to do wheelies in sl, but the gearing was so low that the rpm's would rev so high i was scared i would blow it up. that thing did hellafied wheelies in first and even second with a knee on the seat! lot's of fun when i was twelve, but i cracked the bearing carrier trying to hand with the older guys on the jumps! lol!

The 85 I'm restoring with my nephew doesn't have a SL, it's just a straight 5 speed like Trike mentioned on his.

My 1983 doesn't have anything like that. Are you sure it was a 125??

Hey folks, i just found your site and did a search on the Trimoto and saw your topic. I have a 1980 125 and it has the SL GEAR in it. I have been considering doing a resto on it or an upgrade to a set of 175 forks because of the shocks. Which do ya'll think would be the best?

I have a 125 also and I am in the process of putting a 175 motor in mine I bought a set of 175 forks to put on my 125 but when they where shipped to me a hole has punched in the box and I lost one of the forks so I am in the process of trying to find another set of forks. Good luck in your conversion Glenn Oister
