View Full Version : ticking noise in engine.
I think some wheres here on the board there was something like this but didn't get a real answer about it.
I have a YTM 200ERN, sense i changed the head i'v had a weird ticking noise coming out of my engine. The fast i go the louder and faster it gets. I'v check the valve adjustments, They are dead on. Check the timing chain for tightness, Perfect. Made sure the valves wheren't hiting the piston ( by pulling it over slowly and making sure it's doesn't bring up, not an issue. Now there is a guy at work with a yamaha Big bear , who says his engine does it to. My engine never did this before with the old head. I'v done every thing i can think of. I am now turning to my friends here for help. I don't know if this is one of those sounds i should be worryed about or just forget it i ever heard it. The bike still has lots of power, it dead on with timing and fuel wise. spark plug is a nice paper bag brown.
p.s i don't know weather it's getting louder or what
Any input on this would be great. :)
is the top end getting enough oil? when I rebuilt my 200sx I did somethign wrong and the top end was ticking bad, found out there easnt enough oil flow, I had acidently put a o ring in on top of another one blocking soem of the oil. I know your motor is differnt but it may suffer something similair to what mine did, after I found the problem my top end was getting oil fine and runnin like a champ

Your rocker arms probably are worn, same as my bike, and the fox, and 75% of all the other people that have YTM's hahah. You can repalce the rockers, dont know how much they are from yamaha though.
I did check for oil, by removing the oil plug on the head (which is there for this reason) And it poured out. Also i had the valve covers off while the bike was started and she threw oil every where. I thought the same thing till i checked it out..Like i said i don't know what could be causing this.

While i'm in luck, because this bike wasn't used all that much in the past exept in the last 7 years, and i still have the old head that i took the cam, rocker arms, valves , every thing i could get out of it came out.
P.S so this is common with Yamaha bikes?
a lepracon! those litle basdards get into everything!

You sure it isn't an exhaust leak your hearing?

Nope, that problem was fixed when the head was change. the reason why the head was change to start with. some one had destroyed the stud holes, making the exhaust impossable to mount right, causing my bike to backfire on gearing down and leting off the throttle on the up shift.

Yep I posted the same question a few weeks ago. I ended up adjusting the valves and it's still there. I think its the rockers. in search for a new head. but yeah it is a tick and it gets louder as the engne gets hotter. run it till it pukes. then find a new head...
yup, after running the bike for 30 minutes came home, pulled the plug tested it, did three test, any where beteen 155 to 160 psi

LOL...it's one of those sounds that drive me nuts:crazy:
I got the other rocker arms out of the old head. The old head was 100 percent noise free. I was going to change till i notice some thing. I can change one but can't change the exhaust rocker arm because the damn head bolt goes down in front of the dowel that holds the rocker arm on. I have to remove the bolt and the problem is my torque wrench gauge is way out of wack. so i'd never get the bolt back to the 25lbs it's suppost to be..

you're on the right track with the rocker arms. same prob with my ytm a few years back. i've got 2 ytms, and have had the heads on and off about a half dozen times on each. i wouldn't worry so much about the exact torque, as making sure you get the tightenning order done properly. if you need it, i'll check my book and let you know what it is.

lol....one head bolt..ONE head bolt stoped me from doing this , the other 3 isn't the problem there not in the way.....I can't see warping the head be taking one head bolt out for aa short 10 to 20 minutes?...i know my service manual say 25lbs par head bolt

One problem that causes excessive wear in the rockers is swapping used rockers and cams from two differant bikes....The rockers wear themselves into the cam, and if they arent paired up afterwards, you will get fast wear and eventually a tick...Im goign to save up and buy a BRAND new cam (maybe aftermarket if you can still get em), brand new OEM rockers, and new rocker pins.

my plans where to take every thing out of the head thats on the bike now, being the arms, cam, pins every thing. then every thing that was in the old head, put them on and hope this solves my problem. Like i said before this bike was barely used in the past exect for the last 6 or 7 years. When i got the bike it made no top end noise what so ever. the only thing i heard was the sound of the timing chain. and thats the way i want it again..

Where the hell do you get new rockers, and pins. that would be slick to do since I am going to put a web cam in mine sometime soon?
The noise is agravating...
Thanks
