Ok this is a stupid question but here goes.
Has anyone modified a wiseco piston?
When I look at most wiseco piston there is alot of slag that could be removed for lightness. Now being a Canadian Red neck, who am I to say how to make a piston. But in all mass produced items there never perfect. Would you have to have to ballanced?

well... i suppose you could, but it would probably be more prone to cracking.... and i probably wouldn't spend 125+ bucks to see if it works... but if you race and have a few extras layin around and have the time.. go for it.. as for balancing... i don't know about professional balancing.. but try to keep it even... don't just hack away one side.... if u try it, good luck!!

I mean like filling down the letters and some large slag pieces. No I don't race but I do drive a tecate so I guess Im as close to blowing up as you can get.

Theres other safer mods you can do, I have never heard of someone lightening a piston so im not sure if you can do it. shave the head, lighten the flywheel, reeds, pipe, PORT.
Where in canada are you from?

as long as you only smooth it out it wont hurt , but i doubt you'll feel any gain from it.

they already make a lighter weight piston, its called the Pro-Lite. And trust me, theres not much more to take off of one of those heh.

um, there is no slag on a wiseco piston unless its from the 70's. and any good performance engine builder can port or lighten/balance a piston. nac's racing does it and dave moore racing does it. dave moore can do any 2 stroke piston whereas nacs only does 250R's. im sure trinity, esr, etc. can do it, but it like said before you dont need it unless you are racing and you are looking for every 1/16th of a horsepower you can get.
There is nothing to really balance on a single cylinder motor. Pistons on multi cylinder motors have there weight matched, as well as the rod to assure nothing is going to vibrate. it's been a while but wiseco's are forged pistons right? Forging is the process of basically beating a lump of alloy, aluminum in this case, into a basic shape. It aligns the molecules in the metal and makes a stronger end product. There should be no slag whatsoever on a forged piston since they not poured. Now i have a buddy who does race motors for quads and he lightens pistons, by milling out excess material under the dome. The most you'd gain is a few grams less weight. I wouldnt bother. What i do like to do to my own pistons, and my motor builder does it as well, is sand the tops, or scotchbright them a bit. I'm not talkin major material removal here, all i do is nock the sharp edges off the piston if it has any. A flat top won't, but if it's dished or domed there is always a ridge that i smooth out. Basically what your doing is removing heat risers that can cause a hot spot if your running lean or precombusting. I do this so as not to put holes in my pistons if the bike isn't running 100% correct.I run high comp in my 350x, so i sanded the ridges on the dome then polished it to reflect heat back into the combustion chamber. When i changed pistons in my 250r i don't think i did a thing to it... Hope this helps

actually, you can balance the piston as far as exhaust and intake sides go, so the piston will slap more evenly on both sides and there isnt more or less inertia put on the rod going either way. you can also balance the crank so there is less harmonic interference in the crankcase.
I knew about crank balancing, i just have never herd of anyone of anyone drilling or adding mallory metal to balance one out on a atc/atv application. As far as balancing the piston alone, that's a new one on me. Cool concept though.

like HRC1 say's ... i turn my piston(s) to sand , scotchbright and then Polish the Top just like the Head(s) in the Dome and the sqiush area like a Mirror..
"gets the exhaust out" .....NICE !!! :naughty:

Well I just came in from looking at my old wiseco piston and there is a little bit of raised surface as letters. I have seen this and more "slag" on other pistons. As far as modify a high performance item. Who has all bolt on things that have not been modified. Making a 250 cc a 310. There is always power gains. Now you probably wont notice the difference. But any weight you can shave on the piston can only boost hp. Hence the pro light piston. Im not going to do this to my bike right off hand but mabey at the end of its life.
