Two nights ago I found an exhaust leak at the flange, so I welded a solid bead all the way around and it quieted the R down quite a bit. Well I like the look of exhaust wrap tape and went and bought a 50 foot roll of grey/black. Last night I wrestled with the tape for about two hours as this was my first time working with this stuff. What I discovered is:

1. Soaking it in water helps not only working with the tape but also the fiberglass itch factor.

2. Use zip ties as you go along to keep tension and not have the tape move around.

3. I also learned to use the roll as a way of getting good tension on the tape-like you see when they are wrapping the ankle of a football player....

4. Be prepared to wrap and unwrap and wrap and unwrap... you get the picture.

5. The bracket that bolts up under the gas tank is a pain to wrap around.

6. When you think you are done do not cut this tape until you know you are done. Dont ask what happened on this one. Measure twice cut once.

It was 8:00 when I got done a little late to really fire it up and let her warm up- but I am amazed how quiet it is compared to before exhaust leak, then welded now wrapped, it sounds so cool and contained. I did not do this for any performance gains, mostly cosmetics and heat shield for my leg, but if it does increase performance than so be it.

One question I have is what do you think will be the effect on jetting, warming up the engine etc. I really dont have a good place for plug chops. Theory, ideas, opinions, bring em on.

hey look at it like this, you are saving the leg from burns right? the jetting should not be a factor, you should run it see what it does then make your plan of attack, my 85 tecates had rap and one ran sweet the other loaded up some but that was way back in 85'' i took the rap off of one. now my lt250r its worked and i warm it up before the abuse hahahaaa''

i use that stuff at work all the time. it is a pain in the @$$ to work with thats for sure.

i don't think it will have a real noticeable efect on jeting or performance , outside of a labratory setting. i am thinking about my pipe coverd in thick cold mud. the whole engine coverd in thick cold mud also probably has more efect on the engine than header wrap.

it is a interesting look. not realy the look for my bike . but it would look awsome on a wide lowerd flat tracker, road racer or ice racer. it would keep your leg cool also, i often ride in shorts and have had the letters DG burned into my leg before.

i have to ask can i sign you cast

Dammit!

You could have acomplished the same thing with a billet exhaust flange off ebay for thirty bucks.

the 57 has a warmed over 350 nothing real fancy, turbo 400,0 3:73 gears, disk brakes and lowered two inches with dropped spindles. Had that thing since I was 15.

Powertech,

good points about cold mud etc... not sure what you mean "can I sign you cast" please clarify

wrapping the pipe will change the performance, as does ceramic coating pipes etc. Maybe it will make it perform better? who knows? nice job regardless!

i was looking at the pipe pics, and it sort of resmbled a broken leg.

from what I know, the wrap contains the hot exhaust making the exhaust flow better, I was considering doing this to my r, but if you go riding and get mud on it will it soak in or discolor? so I'm going to save that for my Track R that I will build, by the way how much did that stuf cost? is that one of the kits you can get at autozone/pepboys?

Thanks man, funny you mention ceramic coating, Initially I was going to have this place down the road from me do that but I needed the practice as I need to do my harley sportster exhaust next.

Powertech, I just spit my Sprite all over my keyboard laughing out loud....people around me here at work probably think I am nuts, that is too funny.

sky,

I wanted black, this is what they gave me and it is labeled black, I will find out tomorrow in Ocala what dirt does to the wrap. It costs me $41 and it was a speed shop for cars, automotive engineering. I used hose clamps to finally secure it. 2 inch by 50 feet.

Off topic for this thread but instead of starting a new thread I will just put a couple questions here.

Who carries the headlight element for my 85r?
What about the exhaust gasket?

I had this done on my bayou. Well it was already done when i bought t and i guess it wasnt put on tight enough. My whole header rusted out in about 6 months.

the bulb is called a H4 style buld and many cars and motorcycles use them. any auto parts store has them. i orderd mine from ebay. i got those super bright blue kind.

the gasket that goes inbetween the flange and the cylinder is in evey topend rebuild gasket kit. a top end gasket kit is like 10 bucks.

the piston ring type seals on the flage that seal the exhaust pipe i got from honda. there is one steel ring and one graphite /steel reiforced ring .

good point. that stuff does retain moisture and it does look like $#!!t when it gets muddy.

Thats a cool look, I like it. If you had made your own pipe and it didn't look good enough for you that'd be a good cover up too. Nice job.

I am not to concerned about the pipe rusting out but I will certainly keep an eye on it. I have heard similar stories with car headers/manifolds. I plan on taking it off and then I will sandblast and then ceramic coat then re-wrap. By the time I get around to doing that I will probably just get a DG pipe and silencer.

Powertech thanks for the answer on my other questions.

$41 for the wrap , it's under $100 to get a Ceramic Coat , with the cleaning and blasting.....
