Hi all -

Question:

I am working on a 1982 ATC200. When I got it - it had some electrical problems. Got them all straightened out and have good spark. Now when I start it up - it revs to the moon. It is not throttle cable related for sure. What else should I be looking for? BTW - I have the idle screw backed all most the whole way out. When I adjust it - it has NO effect.

Help me please.

Tim

Sounds to me like you have a serious air leak. Try putting your hand over the back of the carb to restrict it, then try it.

Yep.. all 3 of the Atc 200's I have owned all had cracked intake manifolds and caused them to rev really high.

I accidently did this to my 200x when i first had it, the carb slide needs to be positioned so the little slot fits into the groove in the side of the carb. When i gave it gas it revved high like that too and stayed. Could be that simple, or coule be an air leak.

I had a similar problem with my 250es carb. Butterfly valve wasn't closing all the way. Simple adjustment corrected it.

My first thought too. The thottle slide may be rotated 180 degrees which will allow the top to go on carb, but it is held wide open.

Is it low on gas or is the gas off, or even clogged? All my trikes always reved super high when they were nearly out of gas

well my yamaha i am sure it is the choke, because when we first start it, it revs " to the moon" and after a few mins of riding it the thing idles... when it was inside it started up first pull and idled, and now we leave it outside and it revs until it's warm... so i am like 90% sure it's choke issues.

Thanks for all the replies guys. This was first one for me. After 2 hours of carb off carb on / cleaning carb / inspecting intake boots - It was the freaking throttle cable.............I inspected it all over and about a foot down from the thottle (near the frame neck) there was a ring of black tape. I removed the black tape and the cable was damaged there. I replaced the cable and VIOLA!!! normal idling and reving.

Again - thanks for the helpful suggestions.
