Killing this bike to save my 84 Tecate. Woohoo........

84 KX250 for $300. Guy wrote on the receipt garanteed to run or money back. He seemed straight. Guess I'll find out.

Broken kick start. Hopefully from tons of compression. (Sweatin)
Intake boot is a bit dry rotted of course. Damn!
PWK Carb though.
A rear drum brake- WTF?
Non greasy repair manual.
Good pipes.
Good lookin wiring.

And here's some airbox pics BigGreen.

Well I think I am stuck with it now. Check it:

Well fork caps are marred up bad from hack mechanic and when I undid the tie-downs it sounds like air was hissing out of the fork(s).

I hope to get it runnin and try to wear those pretty tires out.

No rear brakes either. Linkage busted?

T3 has no spark. Pipe was broken by previous owner and melted the wirin harness some. No spark. Have not tested anything.

These are my winter projects.

I would put the kx motor in the t3, fix the kicker, use the kx carb, reeds, intake, get a nie boost for not much.

That was the vision I had when I saw the pictureless for sale ad.
I had to have it so I could fix my trike the lazy way.

I would put the kx back together and keep it too. Those were kick ass bikes. Classics.

Do I see a quad vent PWK Airstryker?

Looks like I was wrong about the exhaust, I don't think it will fit up on the T3 chassis but you could make it fit I'm sure.

Amazing deal, you scored some really sweet stuff. You'd pay close to 300 on egay for a good condition KX jug. Pretty cool how the KX motor is basicly identical to the KXT version.

I'd try and use that aluminum doglink on the T3 for weight savings over the steel piece.

Your 84 T3 looks complete, even has OEM rear fenders which are getting super rare. I bet if you Ebay'd the rear fenders, headlight/guard and the rear chain/disc guard you could offset the price of some new plastics and misc stuff.

I was looking at a yamaha blaster yesterday and the fenders would fit very nice IMO. MAier makes custom Blaster fenders that look like Raptor rear fenders and come in tons of colours.

You mean blast fenders actually fit on the T3's? :ike the 84 & 85 models? :p

So what is the difference between the KX and T3 cylinders?

BigGreenMachine
12-08-2006, 10:54 AM
I doubt they would bolt on dude but they look small enough to fit without having to use a new fender brace and would look pretty sweet if you used the "maier custom" fenders.

Better porting with the KX cylinder. The T3 is basicly a detuned KX to be trail/rider friendly.

I'd love to ride a KX jugged T3, or even better.. a nicely ported KX cylinder T3!

So a ported T3 cylinder would be just as good? Then why would people spend the $$ on the KX cylinders?

BigGreenMachine
12-08-2006, 11:35 AM
Nope, the KX has a different port design with dual exhaust ports. It makes more power then the T3 jug. I'm not sure if a ported T3 cylinder would be comparable but I'd put money on the KX cylinder being better.

A ported KX cylinder on a T3 bottom end would rip! Especially with the KX ignition and that PWK carb.

Nd4speed, IMO you'd be better off using the KXT bottom end for the strength of the T3 tranny. The T3 trans was designed to hold up to the extra traction afforded by the two rear tires.

12-08-2006, 12:01 PM
nd3speed, great deal on that. Lots of useful parts to make the T3 rip! If you would like to make some money back on the bike, I would be interested in the tanks shrouds and radiators. You shouldn't have a problem making the two work together great. You have two very complete looking bikes. Go for it broher!!

Weather warmed up and I couldn't wait to get into it.

Fluids drained were fresh looking on KX and not too bad on T3.
Inside the KX and T3 clutch covers I found no damage.
Put kickstart from T3 on KX.
One liter of oil in KX cause that's all I had (Note to self- get more)
KX was hard to start and seems to run rich. Probably why kicker was broke.
Air screw was more than 2 turns out. At 1 3/4 now.
Only starts with choke pulled and plug gets wet easy and floods.
Front left shock is completely blown and hisses air.
Front brakes didn't work that great.
Had to adjust clutch cable it was way off.
Expansion chamber seals blown and has at least one pin hole on weld bead.
Spewed oil gunk at silencer connection.
One clutch friction plate does not look the same as the rest.
Has great compression.
Took 3 hours.

Rode it around the block but never left second gear.

BigGreenMachine
12-10-2006, 07:00 PM
What was the power like, say, compared to your 86 T3?

Check your timing and carb float height.

Thank goodness it runs right??

nd4speed
12-10-2006, 08:15 PM
Not sure about the power. When I ride around the block I can view the city Police Station, so the trips are short. Not a good testing ground, but the neighborhood is safe cause the police are constantly on the block.

It did not want to start without giving it gas even though I would prime the cylinder with gas or choke spray. With some throttle it would start in 3-6 kicks.
I'll figure it out.

Next I plan to pull the stator cover and check out what's goin on in there.
But I dont have a puller. Where can I get one?

Yes I feel much better about it.

BigGreenMachine
12-10-2006, 08:40 PM
Ebay has flywheel pullers for the KX bikes.

nd4speed
12-20-2006, 09:55 PM
Well, it used to be a motorcycle.

And here's the project trike.

I've seen the pullers on ebay but I've never used one like that and don't understand how.

The shifters have all been loose and crappy on all these Kawasakis.

The KX front rim is cracked on the weld on both sides and bent.

Well the U-bolt coil rig worked.

Jb welded the coolant tube on the head. It is there to stay now.

Ran some new coolant line with a union.

My pipe mount is broken off isn't it? So need to rig one up somehow.

Found out my gas tank shutoff valve leaks at the seal. This had better be fixable with some kinda goop.

Why not put KX the topend on the trike? I thought they fit. I would want my trike to have a trike tranny. The spacing is much wider on the trike. Besides, those Trikes go so friggin' fast who takes it out of 2nd gear? LOL

BigGreenMachine
12-31-2006, 11:59 AM
KX and Tecate have the same gear ratios. The Tecate's gears are more robust and able to handle the added traction better then the KX. No big deal.

Cause I'm lazy and cheap. About $860 into this project and it's not done. And I am gonna want new rims and tires. This thing is a tank compared to my 86 T3. Forks may have to be rebuilt. Hoping rear brake pads are same as 86 T3 / LT250R. Plan on selling some parts to recoup costs.

Info on a shutoff to tank seal would be killer Moose.

The big bore stroker kx 250 for the 84 tecate-3? I have the stroker crank, and cylinder all done, just need to nikisil the cylinder and sell it. The guy I was building it for bought a big bore kit instead. So, I didnt finish it. It seems the earlier tecate3s are dead, nothing is selling for me.

If I spent $400+ on any one thing it would be for a extended swingarm or kx500 motor for the 86 T3.

Today....Made a pipe mount. Bent the silencer pipe more to fit. Have to make a bracket for that now. Put a coat of black paint on the NOS DG pipe I got from the guy from Arizona that is unloading them on ebay for $30. Put on the gas tank since I stopped the leak for now with Permatex High Tack. Then the propane for my heater ran out.

Anyone ever use K&N filter spay oil on a foam filter?

What 30$ pipes are you guys talking about . Let me in on the secret!

Search "KXT pipe" in ebay motors. I bought one just because it was cheap, and I wanted to compare it to my old pipe(also a DG). If you are the only bidder it would be $45 shipped.

nd4speed

Come on you guys! Are you serious? Does it have the DG badge. I just picked one up a few months ago for 60$ and it is used with a few dents in it that I was going to have removed with a stud gun. Do one of you guys have a pic of the front side of the pipe?cr480r how did it compare to the DG? And what do guys think about keeping this secret to our self.HAHA just kidding !

nd4speed
01-03-2007, 11:03 PM
Well I put my badgeless pipe on tonight. DG? Don't really know but it fits. How well will it work? Don't know yet, but I don't have anything to compare it to except my 86. May be an older model of pipe.

I painted the pipe and some of the trike because of rust spots.

T3 LOPES
01-04-2007, 12:10 AM
To bad you have nothing to compare it to.But the pipe does look nice painted . What color was the pipe when you received it? Was it full of rust?

cr480r
01-04-2007, 04:01 AM
Mine looks like a brand new part. I looks Identicle to my old pipe, my old pipe doesnt have a tag either. The new one has "DG perf." stamped onto the the inside of the mount, and two dimples for the head studs. I bought my old one used on ebay, and the seller claimed it was an Answer. But I always figured it was a DG, and its got the same dimples and brazed on mounts as the new one. For $45 I figured it would be a good spare, or re-sell it at a later date.

nd4speed
01-04-2007, 05:40 PM
It was black and rusty on the inside.

nd4speed
01-05-2007, 09:42 PM
Well..... I got to ride it around the block up to 2 gear.
So much for the first ride.

Carb seems rich, smokes alot, not much power, plug black and kinda wet. But I jetted it for colder weather.
Now need to find out how reliable it is.

Still needs lots of things, but honestly, I built it to be a beater.

cr480r
01-06-2007, 06:02 AM
It looks like alot of fun. I cant wait to have my "beater" back again...

Well the 84 KX250 tank/radiators/shrouds are sold.

After finding no gasket between the reed cage and cylinder and bad reeds last weekend this T3 runs great in the cold. There's lots of snow and the tall gearing and big tires really help out, but it barely moves on the snow-covered ice.

The carb leaks and the fuel doesn't shutoff and the filter has a chuck of garbage in it now. More work!:( Made a grab bar for it but it's pretty funny lookin (Home Depot special). Wonder if the maier low profile plastic will fit without cutting?

The pipe seems alright but likes to hit in the upper rpm range. Right now feels like a better pull on top than the 86. Also seems like the front tire hops up and down at high speeds.

Just wondering if there has been any more work done to this project now that it's finally warm. Hows it running? and are you happy with the outcome. And oh yeah, bringin some t3's to TF?:beer

nd4speed
06-05-2007, 10:59 PM
Well not much. Fixed the petcock leak. Put 4/156 hubs on the rear with steel wheels painted black with stock 86 T3 tires on them. I tried to put a front aluminum 200x rim on it that I bought off ebay. The picture showed the rim on the T3 but not that it was off center. So I either have to try to center it and run no front brakes or take the ice studs out of the stock front tire.

I have new plastic for it but my cheap custom grab bar is in the way of the rear plastic. Leaned the main jet but it still seems rich and have not rode it at all.
I think I am going to sell it.

I would like to bring them to the fest for at least Friday's drag races. They definitely won't win any beauty contests.

nd4speed
11-24-2007, 11:50 AM
Well it has been six months and this thing has basically sat around.
The latest is the 200x front wheel setup was a complete waste of money and time.

I bought and aluminum rim 4/100 and a new Kenda front MAX tire.
Put the rim and tire on and rode it on pavement. The front tire bounces up and down due to it not being centered on the rim very well and the front tire wobbles side to side.

Bought an 85 KXT hub and front wheel with worn stock tire.

I bought a set of 85 KXT forks with the front wheel, but they are rust pitted in spots where the seals travel. At least they were cheap.

So for now I am going to leave it and put the studded front tire back on it for riding it on the frozen lakes.

UPDATE: The front axle spacers for hub are homemade and not correct and may be causing some of the wheel wobbles due to being off center some..

Oh and I put a smaller sprocket on the rear so I could remove the extra link I installed because of my mistake when cutting the chain to length. The sprocket was cheap and listed on ebay for old unpopular polaris models.

I think it is 13/40 gearing now.

So I tore into this Trike again....................

The 1984 KX250 flywheel is way smaller than the KXT.

KX cylinder looks to be sleeved, head cut, some porting. Does not look real professional or extreme.
Piston says 439m07000.
Small amount of carbon build-up.
Crank slides back and forth. Stator screw was loose. Case chipped above flywheel. Metal flakes in oil.

Need CW18 pin clips. (Same as LT250R I think)

nd4speed
10-08-2008, 11:18 PM
These flywheels are killin me. The KX one was a pain and now the KXT won't budge. No wonder the bolt was missing and the flywheel was still on there. Guy probably never fixed the spark issue cause the thing is rusted on there or somethin.

Decided to try and get the KXT motor runnin as is but I am getting nowhere fast.

PB blaster and a few rubber mallet wacks?
