On my 86 200x the gearings still stock (13-38) and it seems afully low? Today I was riding with a small group and got passed by a 250ex while I was in 6th 3/4 throttle. I ordered a 15 tooth to raise it up some and get some more top end. How much more top end will this give it? All it has now is a cobra exhaust, uni filter, and it was rejetted. I can get it tapped out in 6th in almost no time at all, so will the 15 tooth give it the topend i need?

that seems a little strange that you are getting passed by a 250ex..I mean...the 86/7x has no trouble beating a 300ex if my memory serves me right. How is the motor doing? Is she tires or what?

i think going with a taller gear u will lose some top end

I tooth in the front goes up about 12 km in my experiences, This will guide you hopefully. Just make sure the motor can pull that high of gearing!

The motor runs excellent. No smoke, weird noises, nothing. It has some pretty aggressive tires so im going with some stock 400ex tires. Im not sure what was done to the engine in the past, but it has the power to get me everywhere i want to go. I thought it was strange too, but get this... I was getting passed by a 200SX ATV...That seemed wrong when I saw him creeping by.
From what I can tell from riding it, I think it SHOULD pull the 15 tooth. It seems to have plenty of torque. I seriously still cant figure out why the 250 is beating me? Then the 300ex blew by it while it was up in the higher rpms.

And yes, I can ride a clutch, even most of the time beating them on technical trails. :w00t:

As a general rule, two teeth on the front is equal to moving everything just about a full gear. In other words, the old first gear will be gone, new 1st will be where 2nd used to be, and youll have an additional gear up on top. Its like taking first gear off the bottom and adding it on the top.

That sounds good then. Usually I can whip it around in 3rd gear, and 2nd is what I have it in for steep hills. Most of the time im in the higher gears.
Above I read the KM/H opinion, Thats about 7.5 mph more with 1 tooth, so thats 15 more mph tops.
What does everyone think about the 15 and keeping up/passing the 250s and 300s on the straight stretches?

What tire size do you have??
Im pretty sure stock was 22? Maybe you 20's which would loose you some top end

hey, you'd be going from a 2.92 to a 2.53, so it may be what you are looking for. Also look into tires, if you're still running 20'' tires, that will rob you of top end speed. Don't the sx's run 22's?

Hmm i dont know why they would pass you on topend. i had an 86 200x and 86 200sx. The 200sx doesnt have any top end, or low end lol. The 86 200x seemed to be faster, i dont know why yours isnt???

Yes the 200sx does have 22s, and its BEAT TO HELL , yet it still never fails to impress me. I just took my X out and put it in 2nd, (being that it will technically be my new first) and it took off decently easy and had plenty of power to do some donuts. We'll see on the 26th.
