I have an 1981 XL500s

it has good compression, it has spark, new carb i cleaned out totally jets included.

it wont start or pop or anything even with starter fluid.

what can i do to try and start this bastaard?

it has been sitting for about 2 years.

it there anything else funky on the bike that could cause it not to start... its getting spark though...

anything i can try? i put some oil in the cylinder and kicked it over... it still cranks over smooth and easy and it seems like everything is fine.

whats the easiest way to check the timing? can i pull a valve cover off without taking the motor out and check it? if i do that how should it be? are there marks?

thanks

hey, if it sat for a long time the valves may be gummed up, sticking. pull the valve covers and check. If so, pull the plug out, leave it out, spray wd40 in the cylinder, and on the valve stems. crank it over until they free up, see if it will fire up, then change the oil.
