UPDATE* Video on page 3

After adding a rear suspension kit, kerker exhaust, nos carburetor, and uni filter, the YTM200-Z (ok name for it?) is almost done with phase 1.

I was planning on using the ’83 frame that the kit cam on so I disassembled the trike only to find that the steering stem has a smaller top race on the ’83 then the ’84 so I had to cut up the ’84 frame. I still need to make a chain roller and jet it but it is getting really close. I will let the pictures do the talking; I don’t feel like typing (all you really want is the pictures anyways).

Oh, does anybody know what suspension kit this is? I have seen them before on Hondas but I can’t remember the name.

ok, picture order
1st - before
2nd - stock frame on top of the cut frame, new cut was on red line
3rd - the kit bolted in
4th - the metal I cut off
5th - after
6th - see the goodies

How much rear inches of travel do you have?

Wikid - it is a full kerker exhaust, I haven't opened it up yet (lose chain and the engine only has 2 hours on the rebuild) but so far I really like the sound. It is deeper sounding but not much louder.

eDog - I have about 3" of rear travel, haven't measured to be sure but it is about that. Not much but better then none!

Thanks for the complements everyone.

Sweet rig! I think the "old school" fat tired trikes are the coolest, especially conversions, and things of that nature. The guy I bought my Z from (he bought it new) used to race trikes. He said that he only road yamaha's because his uncle owned a dealership. He sent me some pics after I bought my Z from him, and it said "this is me out front." It looks like an old tri moto.....I just thought I would share, its the only pic i have.

WiKid - I bought the Kerker off eBay about a year ago. It was used (jbon7 hear on the boards actually sold it to me) and I sandblasted and painted it. This is the second one I have seen, the other one was on eBay new in the box and another board member bought it.

Droopie - That is a sweet picture! Is that full size or did you have to make it smaller to post it?

Thats alright, still sweet to see a tri-moto in action and it even looks to be a YTM200! Take that Honda's:w00t: There may be a reenactment of that pic at the mx track at trikefest this year.:D

Nice project you got there, not alot of them getting fixed up like yours. Hope to see you at Trikefest also. Maybe we can get another N.Y. caravan going there.

Meat-Box, I am in for a spring ride, I get back from college the first week of May so any time after that and I am there. I got to ride at Mike's with him and Kevin last Thursday, those trails get wet when it rains!

I picked up a castor wheel to turn into a chain roller. I wanted a roller skate or skate board wheel but they are tuff to find cheap, I didn't want to spend $20 on a skate board. I will have to find one and replace the one I am making but for now the castor should work.

Got any updated pics?

Not realy anything to update with until I get the chain roller on so I can get some action pics. :w00t: Wheel spacers will be coming in and then I will get some new tires all around for it. I was thinking for the rear a set of 18" mower tires and a set of 20" fast trekers(sp?). The for the front run a 23x7x10 front max or something.

What type of rim will you use on the front. A tri-z one?

It is an aftermarket Honda Odyssey front rim. The early (79-82 ish) FL250 has the same bolt pattern. They cam stock with a 5x8 rim and I bought an aftermarket 5x10 rim for it. I will need to make a 1/2" spacer since the rim is not centered but that shouldn't be too bad.

Well I got the chain roller fabed up, should work ok for now. I had to use a castor wheel instead of a skate wheel since I couldn't find a cheap set of skates. The wheel spacers also came in today so they will go on tomorrow. First trail ride will be tomorrow or Saturday.:w00t:

Ride report (only a week after the fact, lol)

Not so good, first off cotter pins are made for a reason and about 3 minutes into the ride I found that out. Sure enough the front axle nut came off and my axle slid part way out, that ended the ride there. The funny thing is I saw that I didn’t have a cotter pin in the axle a few days before but I had a different nut on which didn’t leave room for the pin so I just left it figuring I would replace the nut later, I was right, the nut has been replaced.

Anyways I did take the trike for a few rips around the yard (grass) before putting the wheel spacers on and this is what I noticed, remember this is after a NOS carb. Kerker pipe, uni filter (removed air box), and rear suspension (about 4” longer then stock now).

First off it slides much better. Now instead of it lifting the front when gassing it to kick the rear end the rear actually sides without much trouble. This is a big plus. It also means that it doesn’t wheelie quite like it used to with normal riding but it still wheelies when ok, I think this is where the pipe come in though. It feels like there is more low end now.

Now for the trail ride (as short as it was). The suspension works ok, not nearly as good as a machine that comes from the factory with it but a good amount better then the hardtail version. Unfortunately I didn’t get to really test it though so that may change some. The main thing I noticed was that it has NO top end. Low end was great, mid was reduced and there was absolutely NO top end. I was going up a hill in 2nd full out and slowing down, my friend was catching me on my Big Red, the YTM had nothing, then I remember the low end I had and put it in 3rd and the front raised and it took off. This shouldn’t be a surprise though as I haven’t rejected (hey it was going to be a short ride) but still. I guess with removing the air box I should have expected it though. I will rejet next time I am home, or maybe a dial-a-jet instead.

One other thing, I put the wheel spacers on for the trail ride (+5 on the rear now) and I didn’t have the steering response I am used to. I also couldn’t slide nearly as easy. As of now I don’t like them much but I will keep them on until after I rejet and get the top end back. I think I was having a hard time sliding with them because the power dropped off too soon.

I will post up some pictures tomorrow, I need to get to bed (darn AM classes).

Looking good Fox. That brake cable looks a bit suspect being so close to the exhaust. I guess you cant rout it properly due to the extended swingarm??

Yeah I really need a longer cable that is why I don't have a foot brake anymore. There is enough space between the cable and pipe though, I bent the holder that goes on the clutch case to keep the cable from rubbing the pipe. Next up will be switching over to hydraulic brakes. The rear shouldn't be a problem as long as I can find a place to mount the foot master cylinder. The front will be tricky as I will need to make a disk mount.

Sweet! That should work a whole lot better then the standard brakes. What kind of bike will you get the callipers off? As for the front end, a Tri-Z front end would be cool??

Not totaly sure what I am going to do. I still have a set of new brakes from a Canondale (sp?) quad that I got off ebay a while back. I figure I will use the rear caliper, rear master, front master. Then for the front caliper I might use the quad one or go with one from a motorcycle. I already have the narrow front rim that bolts to the stock hub, then I can remove the brake hub and make an adapter to mount the disk to the drum mount. After that some type of mount will be put on the fork leg to hold the caliper and I will be set:rolleyes: .

I was thinking about using the whole tri-z front end but I don't want to mix bikes that much. I also think it would make the front end too tall. I have also thought about swapping over to a 200x front hub so I can use the disk mount, narrow tire and speedo drive:naughty: , I don't know if I want to have Honda parts on the Yamaha though.

Actually I don't know, I got them used.

How about a 82 250R front end?

That is another good idea. I really don't know what I want for the front end. I am not sure how I feel about putting Honda parts on this one (the next project will have some mixing:naughty: ) and I am not even 100% sure I want the narrow front tire.

I am looking forward to the brake conversion, I think it will help out a lot. I plan on staying away from using trike brakes though, there is already enough demand for them and I can find motorcycle/quad brake stuff a lot cheaper.

I do like the way it is turning out but yes it has taken a good amount of time. I went through the stock trike when home from school on break and that took almost 2 years, it would have been a year if I wasn't chasing an engine noise that ended up being a worn cam journal on the inside of the head. The performance parts just took a few days to sandblast, paint and install. I did the blasting and painting when I was home in October for a long weekend.

All in all I have had this trike for a little over 3 years and I have only ridden it for about 4 hours. I am just glad that I have the Big Red now; it is always there ready if I want to go riding.

Update. I was home for Easter weekend so I pulled the Yami out. I installed some new floorboards so now I realize I need to straiten my foot pegs because they are really bent. I also added a better chain tensioner but that will have to come off again, sometimes the chain hits the head of the bolt that hold it spring loaded arm on. I took advantage of my brother being there with his digital camcorder so I have a 2 minute long video of it running and me taking it around the yard.

I also swapped out the stock 42 tooth steel rear sprocket for an aluminum 38 tooth one. It was able to wheelie easily in 1st, ok in 2nd, and just come up in 3rd. Now it will barely come up in 2nd. I figure when I get some 20" tires on the rear this summer the gearing will be right where I want it.

The video....
