Fork Question...

ok.. go ahead and laugh at me if this sounds stupid.. but first.. how does a fork actually work? and whats the purpose of "fork oil" ?? i mean i know the fork compresses and rebounds and it has a spring in it... thats about it.. haha... so someone explain to me in fancy technical terms...

Nobody's gonna laugh at ya for asking. I have a general idea of how they work, but don't want to muddle it up for a better explanation. Most fork oil is substituted for ATF (automatic tranny fluid).
