I have a 327 small block. And need to change the timing cover gasket. It has a B&M harmonic balancer on it. How do these things come off? And do they need to be pressed back on or something? Anyone have a photo of the tool that is used to pull it off?

Any help is great! Thanks.

Pull off the crank pulley and remove the center bolt. Go to your local auto parts store and buy a balancer puller. Remove the balancer according to the instructions and change the gasket. For the install I made a tool that consists of a long threaded bolt that threads into the crank, a nut, couple of washers and a thrust bearing that I got uot of a lower unit from a 25 Evinrude. Hang the balancer on the crank, install the bolt with the nut and washers and turn the nut to press the balancer on. I have seen guys beat the balancer on with a hammer but that has to be awfully hard on the cranks thrust bearing. If you need more details shoot me a P.M.

Thanks mate. I will have to go down the the auto store tomorrow and see how i go. This balancer did not have a bolt in the centre of it, sort of just looks like a cone that goes inside of it (hard to explain). Ill see how i go anyway!

Thanks!

While you're at the parts shop, buy a balancer bolt and put it on. You don't need that thing coming off! It'll do some damage real quick!

Sounds like a taper lock, should still have a bolt though....

I had a 69 Large journal 327 block serial was FB. That thing absolutely flew on a truck with 36 inch tires, I miss it but don't miss the 7MPG.

early small blocks didn't have a crank bolt, kinda scary isnt it. Jim

I guess it's not that scary. I work on boats for a living and all the 4 cylinder stern drives running around don't have a bolt either. These are the 3.0 Chevy blocks.

Yeah my block is a 68 so i guess it didnt come with a bolt...Im getting a puller this afternoon, will see how that goes. How do they go back on? With a hammer?

I always put a 2x4 in front and pound it on with a hammer. Not the most graceful way but ive never had a problem, just remember to install a new seal in the cover. and if theres a grove on the balancer they make a repair sleeve for it, and its only a couple of bucks. Jim

I have used 2 bolts with thier heads welded together, an old throwout bearing, a smallplate with a hole in it to go over the bearing, a couple washers, and a nut. I like this setup because it doesnt stress the threads in the crank snout as much. I tighten the nut till I run out of threads, then pull it back off and add more washers, and repeat. This way you arent pulling with the threads in the crank. Aftermarket dampers especially can be a very tight fit. Beating it on can work in a pinch, but I wouldnt do it to something I owned.
