hey
I've got a few gas tanks kicking around that have some pretty bad rust on the inside. I went and bought 500BB's and dumped them in the tank and shook it around for 25 minutes and it removed some of it but its still pretty rusty in there. Would CLR work for removing rust..ive herd it works pretty good around the house? Has anyone tried this. Let me know because im thinking of starting to do some ATV/Motorcycle gas tank restorations.

i heard viniger works on rust but as soon as it meets air it starts to rust again. u would need to seal it instantly.

I took one of my gas tanks to a Radiator shop, they hot-dipped it and coated the inside with a polymer.. good as new.. never rust again.

You can buy do-it-yourself kits.. with acid and neutralizer etc.. but it's a messy job !

Thanks for the replys trikes4life and bigredhead and I did some research on both your theories.

The vinigar theory: It is proven vinigar will remove rust BUT the item must be fully submerged in it, i couldnt just pour some in the gas tank and get it to remove the rust on the bottom I would have to completely fill it. Once vinigar meets air it will rust even worse then if I filled the tank with water.

Bigredhead: What you said im sure would be the best way but this tank isnt going on my trike, im just trying to clean it up and sell it because it will be a perfect tank once I get rid of the rust and if I payed to get it hot dipped and a liner put it in then, well I would be out money, and im looking for kind of a do it yourself challenge.

Anything else work to remove rust?
