honda 200x not shifting into 2nd?

I have a 85 200x motor that i just bought off of ebay and it shifts fine when its off and your just rolling it and shifting. But when i start it it shifts into first fine and then when i shift into second it just goes into neautral and no matter how hard you hit it it wont go into second gear, and i cant double shift because the shifter wont move until i let off the clutch and then pull it back in but then it goes into 3rd gear and from then on it shifts perfect and it also downshifts perfect. What could be causing this?

Sounds like teeth on the 2nd gear are gone.

If this is true...I wouldn't run it anymore.

Update. I rode it again alittle while ago and now it shifts into second but doesnt go anywhere you can here it clanking like it is trying to fully engage but it doesnt. Do you still think its the second gear?

i would think 2nd gears too if clutch is working fine look at the oil and make sure u dont have metal
cause if u got metal u got problems

What do you think it could be? Im debating on whether to send it back to the guy and get my money back or i have all the good tranny gears out of another x, whether i should tackle the gear swap or not? I really dont feel like splitting the case but the engine runs damn good, starts first kick, has good compression, and doesnt smoke a bit. I sure dont want to send it back. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I have split a case before so i do know what it involves.

what exact year is the engine from? 83's had a different tranny setup and popping out of secong was quite common. i had a 83 that did the same thing.

in 84 they redesigned the tranny. 85 was the same as 84 also.

get a book and read it twice b-4 u start taking stuff apart u have to remove the jug and head and then u can split the cases

hey not trying to hijack this thread but my 85 200x wont go into NEUTRAL unless it is off and im shifting it by hand. Now it wont even go into neutral at all hardly even if its off.... any ideas?
