Im looking for something to be able to handle painting a car. Also, just general use of air tools and whatnot. What is the difference between gas and electric(aside from the obvious)? How about capacity? Im thinking about 20-30 gallon would be good. Im looking for a portable or semi portable unit, not a more permanent stand up unit. Suggestions? 80-90psi is best when spraying a car, correct?

to do a car/air tools you need volume, gas is for mobile stuff, so dont even bother with that, at least a 40 gallon unit, that operate around 125-175 psi, I have a 80 gallon ingersolrand twin, and have it set at 175, also most larger comp like that are 220 instead of the regualar 110, but home depot sells a 40gal 110 unit porta cable that works really well, I had one of those for many years, also when spraying a car you dont use 80-90 psi to spray only 35 to 50 at the spray tip, but about 80 psi in the lines, your going to spend any where from 300-1000 dollars for a good comp

I figured you would be a good source for paint and body knowledge/advice. I am getting ready to sandblast and paint one of my R frames, time to start a resto.

Yeah, but this is something I have needed for so long. In my 8 years or so wrenching on my own projects, I have NEVER had the luxury of using anything power assisted other than drills and whatnot. Hell, I still use a manual bottle jack to change tires and other stuff. Time to make my life a little easier. Thanks for the suggestions!

Sorry I did not mean to get off topic, just ribbing syko.

I have an upright oil less compressor, loud sucker but works for me as a hobbyist. I bought it for 200 about 8 years ago and it is still going strong. It is not really portable but it could be in a pinch. Whatever compressor you end up with you will soon find yourself wanting a bigger setup to keep up with your tools, like a DA or sandblaster. Here is what it kinda looks like.

During the year I always see the Craftsman models go on sale, and also Lowes.

In my opinion buy the biggest capacity you can afford. I hate smaller ones that seem to be running the entire time you are working...the noise is loud and obnoxious! Especially in a small closed area. Also, make sure the compressor is rated to use the tools you plan to use. The ratings should be right on the box...our if the person you are buying it from should be able to help you out as long as you dont buy it from an idiot. Just my 2 cents

you really need to get a standup compressor, those will work them selfs to death trying to run air tools all the time especialy any type of sander, as they take constant air, a larger one is what you want, trust me when one of thise smaller compressors looses all its volume when your painting a car, you can kiss a decent paint job good buy!!

that right there is one of the best compresors for the money, the oiless compressor suck in my OP, I have a little craftsman oiless that I rebuilt like 20 times it still goes but it sucks. this is the one I was talking about sorry it was a husky and not a porta cable, it dosnt come with any acseories, but when it comes to tools there is a big differnce from cheap to good stuf I:e kolbalt-- snap on or mac or craftsman.

Hmmm, they both pretty much have the same features for nearly the same amount of money. The Lowes one would be about $256 after the discount. Not doubting you Allen, it just seems there isnt a lot of difference between the two.

Your link didnt point to anything but a list of things...

*edit* It seems you cant link to any particular item. Im talking about the 299.00 compressor. Is that what youre talking about? I dont want the 399 one since I want it to be somewhat portable.

SYKO

I went and got one of those from hoe depot and I took it back simply because I found one at Blowes for $388 for a 30 gal. (same) but that one has a pump you stick oil into it. http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=215921-71025-KLA1883054&lpage=none
I figger it will last longer because of this and its quieter than those little pissston oil less that make that gawd offul buzzing noise. That Kobalt also looks like its oil less along with that hysky. Mine can do paint guns I think. Whats not recommended is those jitterbug sanders, those long sanders and ....something else I can't remeber right now.

Btw, where do you get those cool aminations there, lincoln?
