I just bought an 85 z and i am having trouble with the throttle cable. In all parts diagrams i have found there are supposed to be two cables and a part that connects them. Mine came with a single cable from the throttle straight to the carb. Is there a single replacement cable that will work, or do i need to buy the two cables and the other missing parts to make them work? If anyone has a pics they could post of where and how the two cables meet that would be great. I have an oem yamaha mannual, but there isnt a single picture of how it is supposed to be- thanks guys

I have a single cable twist grip on my tri-z. It's an EMGO set-up. In my T.R. catolog they don't list one for the tri-z but mine fits.

I hear you can use a 250r cable. You are correct the OEM has two with a thumb assist to help eliminate the thumb fatigue.... you can have one made if you want...

85's had 2 piece
86's were 1 piece. They 86 will work on the 85 without a problem. AThe one piece is actually preferred because of eliminating that little box.

You sure the 86 cable works? I bought one for my 85 and couldn't get it to work. Can't remember if the carb end or the throttle end wouldnt work. I had to sell mine.

You must have the 86 thumb setup, the thread reciever. Other Yamaha thumbers will work, like the Warrior, or the Banshee. I believe some even use 250r's....

ya 250r cable works good!! but the stock throttle wont do unless threded,Witch is easly done!!
I got a 250r throttle on my 85, A warrior throttle on my dragbike and my mx has a stock one threded and all have a 250r cable
*The top of the cap has to have the 45 stock elbow removed and a end like on the keihn carbs (I can take some pics if needed);)
the 85 tri z is a two pice witch ya need the little box and a stock throttle
the 86 tri z is a one pice

that would be great man. so will the 86 tri z cable work? i was also wondering if it is possible to run the machine without an coolant overflow bottle?

yes it will. you will need to thred the throttle or get another one
yes you can run it but i would check the fluid everytime before you ride it, If it gets low it has no where to regain it from.

no its used it is the whole working set-up from thumb throttle to cable to cam to cable to carb end it was a good working set up i just like twist throttle thats why i took it off it is still all in one ready to go on
is the cable new? is it a single cable setup?raffa is correct. you can use a tap, and tap out your stock 85 thumb throttle.then convert to the 250 r cable. on my 85 z I just bought the factory 1 piece throttle cable for the 86 tri-z and used a banshee thumb throttle the banshee blaster and warrior throttles are already tapped out to recieve the new cable..as far as chain rollers,I run a banshee lower roller with a banshee upp brand rear chain slider.I am unaware of where to find the top roller.

i must be missing something ... the cable i have on it is threaded in. has someone else already done this to mine, or what do you have to tap?
Is your cable threaded at the thumb throttle??

I have the 86 cable on mine, but I moved the cable adjuster lock nut to where I wanted it, locktited it, and then ground the threads off the cable end so it would drop into the 85 throttle housing. I thought about tapping the throttle housing, but it looked like it would be awful thin. The easy solution is a Banshee or Blaster Throttle, which are a dime a dozen, and the 86 TriZ cable. The 85 cable system is horrible, which is why they dropped it.
My 86 TRX250 throttle cable had the carb cap as part of the cable assembly, and would never have worked. Maybe the ATC is different, but its probably easier to stay with the 86 TriZ cable for future replacements.

Is your cable threaded at the thumb throttle??
so what do i have then if my cable threads into the thumb throttle?
so what do i have then if my cable threads into the thumb throttle? If your cable is threaded at the thumb throttle, and the thumb throttle itself is threaded,I would guess you have a 86 tri-z cable setup on it.
The 85 tri-z had a non threaded cable end at the thumb throttle. It basically just butted up to the throttle housing. There was also a fulcrum box about halfaway down the cable behind your radiator shroud. These were known to hang up and cuase problems.
If you have the stock carb on the tri-z,then get a 86 tri-z cable, and a banshee, or warrior, or blaster thumb throttle. The 86 cable fits the stock 85 carb and will thread into the banshee or blaster or warrior throttle housing. The 86 tri-z cable was a 1 piece design without the fulcrum box.It is hard to tell what you have without pics of the set-up.
