1983 ATC 200 Front Axle Removal and Repair

OK, I've begun to disassemble the 1983 ATC 200 (no letters after it) that I had in long term storage.

I decided to remove the front wheel assembly first because of a BIG hole in the tire (25X12X9). The previous owner rode the bike at the beach so as you can imagine it is a MESS!

So, how do I get the axle out of the axle housing.....I've had it soaking in PB Blaster for a few days. :confused: I don't have the exact manual for this bike but if I look at the 200s,m,x I can conclude there is a bearing set at each end and a seal. Should the axle just pull out of the housing or are the bearings pressed on the axle?

Once disassembled, I plan to sand plast everything, prime and paint. I will replace the brake pads once I get the housing clean and honed slightly. Any recommendations on source for brake pads? Ebay stores ok?

I've included some photos of the beast. Also since these are the original tires and the front one has a gash that took 5 plugs and still leaks should I replace the tire and if so what is a good source? Or is it ok to put a hot patch on the interior and tube it?

Heat and Beat.

Get a nice piece of hardwood - hold it over the threads and hit it with the biggest hammer you have - repeatedly. If it does not come out right away - add more heat. Once you get it started - twisting it back and forth may help.

Brake pads for that machine are a real common pad (one many Honda bike and quad applications) - your local Honda dealer should stock them - if not - Ebay is second best.

Also - for tires - try your ATV shop - or local tire shop. Ebay is cheap, but then the tire guys hose you on mounting fees. Many tire shops will give you a real cheap mount cost if bought there - VS - bought online and taken to them for mount only.

the axle should of just slid out of the bearings, more than likely the axle is seized on to the bearings. for breaks i like veserah shoes (pads go on a disc brake) For tires there is alot of options for that bike, i have a nobby on mine.

I used a center punch and a framing hammer to remove the axle. Bearings are next. Have an appointment with local Honda Shop tomorrow for minor gasket order. I'll check on bearings adn seals then.
