HELP removing rear brake drum!

Hi,
I have a '82 honda ATC200 and the rear bearings are shot. I need to remove the rear brake drum. I have tried WD40 but I cant get it to brake loose. I cant use heat so do I just have to grind the drum to shreds and buy a new one?

Use PB blaster, soak it and let it sit for a while and hit it with a hammer and use a pry bar of somekind and work it off. They come off one way or the other.

lol my buddy got his loose by taking the nuts off and driving it around, not on purpose but it still worked

i had a1982 200 and had the same problem no matter what i did heat,hammer,kick,yell.no go i had cut it with a grinder problem fixed.got a used one for $10 at a used bike shop.

I got everything apart but now I have to find a way to get the bearings out.

take a long steel bar and drive them out from the opposite sides I think a 14 in extension for a 1/2 in drive socket was about perfect

That's what I have been using. I'll let you know when I am done (if I get done):rolleyes: . Do I need to replace the seals by the bearings if I replace them with sealed bearings? I hope to be done with this job by Saturday so I can do some riding:)

I got the bearings out. I am going to get some sealed bearings to replace the old ones with. Then I am out to do some snow riding :)

DU6007 is the proper double seal bearing you need then you can reuse the old seals as spacers

Can anyone tell me if I NEED the seal on the end of the brake drum housing? I am not going to replace the brake shoes so I dont care if they get wet and dont work.
I ordered the bearings they costed $10 at one place and $32 at the other I went with the $10 ones but I wont get them until Monday:-(

I got the bearings in a did some riding yesterday. It was fun being in the saddle again :-) It was tricky on the hills though. I had two of my brothers on the rack and when we hit a hill did about a 80 degree wheelie. That was too much for me.

I got sealed bearings and used the old seals as spacers. I didn't replace the seal on the brake drum housing I just left the one half of the housing off to let the water drain back out . Do I need to get the seal and put the drum housing back together like it was? I thought that if I left the one side of the housing off I would be fine without the seal. The brakes dont work so I dont care is they get wet.

That seal dosent matter unless your brakes work (which they dont) So you should be ok.

I rebuilt the rear end of my 81 Atc200 also. I put in sealed bearing along with new seals. The seal for the brake drum cost my $7. I did a lot of mudding and it got ruined within a year, filled my brake drum with mud and ruined my brakes. Ever since then I have been riding it open with the drain plug out, but the grit and dirt dont let the brakes work. If you want to ever have brakes I recommend sealing it up, otherwise hang on tight.
Also there is a little o-ring that goes around the axle to help seal off the axle housing when the brake drum is inserted back onto its teeth.If its an older ring it would usually fall apart when pulling the drum and you wont even know it existed. Make sure to replace that o-ring so you dont get any blowby into your housing and risk wearing your seals or axle prematurely.

Thats right, otherside youll get grit inbetween the bearings and the housing.

No, I didnt find a o-ring around the drum so I shoud probably go get one tomorrow. Does the o-ring go before or after the drum? What seals do you mean? I didn't think I would need seals by the bearings since I replaced the bearings with sealed ones. I put the old seals in but they were pretty beat up.

u should of put new seals with new bearings. if u ever by bearings again get them from dads on the site. u get the bearings and new seals for a real good price, and they are the best i have used. there is a oring that goes after u put the drum on, the oring goes between the drumn and axle. i helps keep water out, keeps the drum from coming off. keeps it from getting siezed to the axle

I think I will just run her like she is and if the bearings go out again I will get them from dads. I didnt know their was someone on this site that sells them so I bought mine from John Deere.

You bought them at a John Deere dealer ?
We have one here in town, never thought about trying there.
The local honda dealer shot me a price of about $70.00
for those bearings .

Is there any red line in the throttle or can I run it wide open? I rode in some snow yesterday and there was some places that is was hard and about 12" deep so I had to run it wide open to keep from getting stuck.
