Looks like a nice piece of machinery there. It's suppost to smoke some, after all its a 2stroke and mixing your fuel is sacred to us people keepin it real. Do a compression check on it and the usual bearing inspection and such then enjoy. I've always been a fan of the 2nd gen Rs. A great mix of simple performance with enough suspension to keep the ride exciting. Oh and welcome back, were all here to help.

Looks fairly decent, not bad at all. I just got a 84 a week ago myself.

Is that a 83 since it has a silver swingarm?

Thanks for the comments, it is a 83...And the plastic is a little better in the picture than in person, but not bad....I paid $450 for the bike and extra paddles(new rims and paddles)....needs new handlebars, and some good bolt tightening everywhere....The smoking I witnessed when he started it up, it is more than your usuall warm up smoke....He thinks the carb is the problem, said he put his trx 250 carb on it and it didn't smoke at all....Anyhow alll the wheels and tires(all 5) are recently bought, so I have a goood starting point atleast...Kevin

Wow, very nice! I too am a fan of the second generation R's- Never rode one, but I like the simplicity of the air cooled motor. Question- Brapp told me the air coolers handle poorly, I guess he's comparing them to the 85-86's. Any FB on this? Huffa?

Couldn't tell ya, I'm all new to the R, only rode mine 5 minutes.

I can tell you though that set up on ANY machine is very important. There are so many varibles to change on a machine that it could handle with the best or worst of them.

GOD, in the front you have different weight fork oils, fork oil height, springs, fork tube height, handlebars height & width & tire choice and then in the rear you have shock preload, static sag, spring choice, compression/rebound adjustment, axle location (farther front/back) on swingarm ..........what I'm getting at is you can make a trike handle far better or worse depending on your knowledge of adjustments.

My CRf 450 motocrosser will handle like crap if you have a few adjustment off just a little bit but will handle with the best of them if I take the time to dick with it a lot and quite frankly I DON'T because I'm just out to have fun, ya know.

Depending on the riders weight is a huge factor too, so I'm more inclined to blame set up on a machine that handles below par of what it should be.

Handle poorly in what way is he talking about, just curious? If it's jumping maybe the 5/6 comes with stiffer springs so of course he will like it more, then again a lighter guy or a guy that doesn't jump may like the softer sprung 83/84, see what I mean?

Just sitting on mine it feels too soft though asnd even though it has forks set up with air valves on top, that's "old school" thoughts and if anything you want to bleed all the air out and try a heavier oil with a bit more in each leg. Air has moisture in it, who wants to add a bit of water to their oil!

 I got off the subject here, but so what, thought you might enjoy my thoughts on suspension tuning just a bit. :beer

Fired it up today and it is running terrible, runs like the ckoke is on all the time...Took the air filter off and when the motor is running, fuel is spraying out of the rear of the carb....Smokes awful bad also, the guy told me he just rebuilt the top end and it had about 10 hrs on it.....It already the mix in the tank, he said he mixed it rich...I haven't changed the fuel so I guess the smoking could possible be that, but the fuel coming out of the back off the carb is something else.....Also the bike runs the same with the choke on or off, perhaps a new carb is in store for the 250....Any suggestions will be appreciated...thanks

Sounds like your floats are sticking when the gas comes out. Tap on the bowl a little or just clean bowl out.:TrikesOwn
