View Full Version : Handling ? concerning 200X/250R

Forget completely about the motors, I'm strictly talking how the trikes handle here .......

I had two 86 200X's and just loved how they flicked around with ease and the size of them just seemed perfect to suit my size (6'/190lbs) just fine. Weight wise I was a bit on the heavy side for a 200 but for what I used it for it did just fine. I don't have them any more but wish I had one to do a direct comparison to my recently bought 84 R because ............

The R feels like a huge BEHEMOTH of a trike to me and although I'm not being real fair to totally judge it since I only rode it for 15 minutes, from memory I really favor the X over the R concerning the flickability of it, I hope in due time I find myself wrong though and I will get more comfortable on it.

The aftermarket bars seem so wide and high .........and I don't think I like the twist throttle on it as it seems in certain body english postions the twist throttle puts my wrist at a awkward position.

What is the stock width and height of the bars on a 83/4 R ?

If you had or have a X and R, please tell me your thoughts on this.

Thanks!

edog, I'm talking HANDLING here, not POWER. I know your just trying to piss me off though!

That's funny....I was thinking the same thing about you.:welcome:

I think you should get a little more time on the 250Sx before you hop on that 300R.

I would pick the 200X for flick ability. The 2ooX is just a better trail machine.

Sounds like a setup problem more than anything. Of course every trike will handle different and I'd be willing to bet that the 86 200X handled better than the air cooled R.

Tires, wheelbase, rake, handlebar height and angle, fork height etc etc all make it an entirely different machine...

I own both the 86 200x, and 83 250r. I'm 16 years old 5'8 and 130 pounds lol... I do feel more comfortable on my X compaired to my R. But the R is growing on me, and I am getting use to its size. I'm still scared of my R quite a bit but I think as time goes by, and more riding time will make me feel more comfortable, and be able to do the things with it as I do on my X.

I got the proof! :D

Huffa.. why not get some diffrent bars, a thumb throttle, and lower profile tire like 20" holeshots. ;)

I see riding posts and pics from Huffa ALL the time.. how can you not know that he rides alot?!

And I've always thought the 83/84 R looked a bit small for the power it cranks out. I have an '85 R and I LOVE it. Its so light and maneuvers awesome. I can't talk about the earlier years though.. never rode one.

I don't think that Tires that hook up better would be a good idea for Huffa.

He mite find himself in the brush on that 300R.:p

but the lower stance of the holeshots I would think make it a bit more stable... than say the stock ballon tires. don't you think?

You want to REALLY ride? Come down our way !! We will show you how it's done! I'll even give you a free tank of gas to get you 1/2 way home! :beer

I don't like smaller tires, never did, never will. Don't forget, the R is going to be the sandmaster for me so I'll put on thoes pro wedge jobs I think.

edog I plan on going up to the dunes at least 3 times if not more this spring, summer and fall. Join us ya wooz. :beer

Ya,riding that 300R in the sand is your best bet.You don't want that thing hooking up on a trail and flipping you off of it.:p

Theres a reason that on the ultra small flat tracks like the ones inside of rodeo arenas that the 200x's would keep up and occasionally pass an R. When it comes to slide-ability and being able to hug the ground, the 200x with a few mods cannot be beaten. On the bigger tracks where the power is usable a 200x will always get smoked by any of the 250Rs, but on the really small tight short tracks cafe racer style they own, period.

True, but you just have to DUNE IT a few times in your life !! Leave on a Friday, stay Saturday & Sunday, come home Monday.

Get a freind to go to split gas & driving. I plan on going in May for the 1st time.

I'm sick of sayin "I'd love to do it sometime" This year, it's HAPPENING !! ..........and not just once!!

how bout you put the two fitty in the 200x frame... Although you'd have to put the 250 swinger since the chains on the wrong side... And probly some big frame mods.. hmmmmm

Wheres these dunes? In N.Y. the dunes are usually like 10-40 acres. I want to bust the Tecate out on some Pismo action. I just cant drive that far. Damn, it cost a little more than $500 i think round trip for T.F. last year. And I must say it was worth every penny. I cant wait for this year. I hope to bring my 86 200x and the Beasty Tecate. And the quad to tool around on and pull people out of that nasty Haspin Clayment:beer

Huffa i always liked the CR high dirt bike bend handlebars. try one of those.

the 300 will be awsome at Rocketraceway with some 18" turftamers. did you ever run tires that small at MX? i'll bring you a set to use if we ever go riding there and you'll see the foolishness of your ways. just teasing

stock some offset 300ex/400ex hubs on it.

Where are you going duning, Huffa? I'd love to come. I'm beginning my R project this summer though.. so if we dune I might just have to use the Z or X.
2 summers ago was the SX project.. last year was the X, and this year is the R. Unless I get the R done in time for the dunes, its going to be out of commision!

It's a 12 hour ride up Michigan way, so I would have to make it a two day event to make it worthwhile and leave on a Friday, get home on a Monday type of deal. That is the closet place to me and it's on my MUST DO list for this year.

Wanna cruise up too? Some time in May I'd like to do it and if I really love it, maybe once every 2 months or so :beer It looks like the most fun I could possibly have on a trike, at least I think so.

Your all set, having a Z and all, Lets GO !! :beer

18" Those are Dunkin Donut size  I'd go 20's but that's about it. Those vipers you and me have are actually more in the 20 range I think.

Man, we will have so much fun out there now!! If Chris comes, he will poop his pants I bet tiding a track like that

As for the bars, there are high jobs on now, don't think I care for em, nor the twist throttle, I'm a low boy man, I think.

you'll be amazed at how good it'll handle with them on. not as tippy and be able to sldie it around better. thats all i ever run on a track.

whats your reasoning for not liking 18" riding at a track?

i'll be bringing my trx250r and maybe the atc250r

Oh, I'm not saying they won't work well, I'm sure they work fantastic, I think it makes a trike look dorky though and worry about bottoming out more often? They have a H/S loop there too and for that I'd like more ground clearence so I think the best comprimise would be 20's for both situations.

i see your point. thats why i have a ton af extra tires for whatever i'm running.

well i'll guess i'll be dorky then when we go riding there.

I think most love the smaller wheel look, I just can't seem to get used to it, I like OEM size the most or even bigger but know performance wise that is not the hot set up for everything.

Hwy huffa, for handling reasons, dont you have the steering dampner on there?
Wouldnt that take away some of the easy flickness?
