(i kno ill need a frame soon lol)

dude my friends got aN 82 R frame and lots of parts. Like swinger axle 200x front end, niceeee gas tank, frame PM me if your interested
later
hey buddy, You need to sell almost all your stuff that you got listed there, and use that to get yourself going! a 81 r may not be the best but its a start, for the rear to lower it you just need a shorter shock and the front alittle spring removale and raising the tubes up to lower the front, then the appropriate tires for it. just make sure your engine is tight and fresh, along with the clutch.

Why dont you just go buy a roller, and put your motor into it. It would be a lot cheaper that way.

i cant find one in my area i only kno of 1 other R around here and its an 85 water pumper and they wont sell it lol.... and i like building my bikes myself lol
you need a 82 so you can stay away from the 3 bolt hubs and rear drum, that will help you out to. but if its an 81 then you can make do.

where are you at in fla? all the races are pretty much up I-75 from tampa to valdosta here in ga, deffinitly find some rear spacer for the axle and a lower shock for it, tires is where your going to get hit at.

Some tips, cut your steering stops a little so you get as much side to side lock as possible. The pros would cut them so much that they had to modify the gas tanks front corners so that the forks wouldn't hit them.
Also get your forks apart and put the top spring down on the dampening rod. That will shorten the front end. If you just take the short spring out, the forks will let the front end rise up during aceleration as opposed to keeping it down for a good holeshot. (thats not good btw)
Depending on how comfortable you want to be you may want to shave down the seat foam as well. Would lower you on the machine a couple inches.
Short low rise handlebars let you hang off the bike better in corners and J-hook bar ends allow you to hold on better. (keeps your hands from slipping off the grips)
A light bike is always better. Some of the bigger parts like brake levers and foot levers can be drilled to shave weight. Every little bit counts.
Of course tires and an extended axle would help a ton. 20 inch tires seem to be the way to go.

BGM, I got a question.
Why would 20's be the way to go? I thought 18's would be it? Lower no?
BigGreenMachine
01-31-2007, 03:42 PM
Sidewall flex. Bigger (wider) footprint. Traction is key. No good to be spinning the whole way around the track.
Maybe an 18 on 8 would do just as well but from what I've seen everyone runs 20's.
The way I look at is a 18 on 8 would give you not a lot of roll to work with. Once you pass that point where the edge stops rolling you break traction slide sideways and end up pointing the other way.
Same can be done with a 20 on 8 but theres more sidewall and tire tread on the ground to prevent this.
Someone want to add or correct me. Not the expert, just going off what I'm seeing.

Most of the tracks down here, not enough traction is not a problems. Its getting the assend of the track broken loose. These dry clay tracks are a whole different surface, its in my opinion way stickier then asphalt.

Below is the race schedule.
Team Red Rider, building your ride is only part of the equation. You are going to need safety equipment, kill switch, number plates. Start posting pics, you will need to show us what you are doing and how you are progressing. If you show up and the bike is unsafe and or poorly constructed you will be endangering not only your life but mine and others as well. The three of us who raced Sunday are here to help as well as any other board members. Start a thread with the parts you have so far, and keep updating the thread as you go.
This was my first race and this type of racing on a three wheeler is not easy like sliding in some nice loose sand.
Race 2 Feb 17 Thunderbowl Speedway Ocala, Fl. 1/4 mile 7pm

Alright, here's something for starters. If you are serious about flattracking. All those parts listed, means nothing. You need to start lightening up FAST. Switch out to the 4/110 hubs, get some 200x wheels and some 18" Carlisle turf savers. I know people will say it is stupid, but I got the idea from another members trike. Saving weight is one of the main things to do. Drill holes in the fins. I know it may not do much, but every little thing helps. I would not drill in the frame or the swingarm because the integrity of them might be jeapordized. Also, switch to a 200x front end that has been lowerd. Possibly cut the springs. Sell all the non needed parts, and save up for a good 10" front rim from douglas. Then buy the front tire for flattracking. Also, you can have your seat shaved for optimum sliding. Kill switch and numberplates all around are a MUST, and that should get you set off. Everthing I listed should be, all together, a good start for under 500, and under 300 if you have the parts and could get some things used. Good luck. And can't wait to see progress...now...get rid of all those dinky trikes. You have a 250R now, it is the only thing that matters.

Sounds good, I will definately do that. Sorry for trying to help ya out though.
$50 That we will never see this kid flattrack though, for the records.
By the way, good luck using a 39mm carb on an 82 R. Might as well take out the 1st three gears too.

you need a 82 so you can stay away from the 3 bolt hubs and rear drum, that will help you out to. but if its an 81 then you can make do.
82R hubs should go right on the 81R axle. Brakes for flat tracking?????

01-31-2007, 09:45 PM
too bad you dont have a '83-'84 frame since the '84 R made around 28hp stock.
Quick questons. What exhaust are you going with and what motor work are you gonna use so you can run the 39mm?
team-red-rider
01-31-2007, 09:46 PM
also if 39mm is too big what should i use? does anyone kno of a place for black 81-82 R fenders? umm an 83 wiring harness will work right? (and the electronics because thats what i bought)
team-red-rider
01-31-2007, 09:48 PM
im gonna get a 10.5:1 or a 12:1 hi comp wiseco piston im gonna use some Vforce delta reeds off of a cr250R if they will work umm im gonna try and find a dg head and pipe! umm well isnt the 83-84 the same motor as the 81-82 pretty much?
Tri-ZNate
01-31-2007, 09:49 PM
no, differences in compression and different pipes that i know of. Puts out more hp than the '83 R even
So yeah nothing HUGE i dont think. But even the frames were different once '83 rolled around

01-31-2007, 09:55 PM
What is the difference between the 83 and 84 engines? Different port angles? And BTW..they do not make a 12:1 piston. 2 strokes are way different than 4 strokes. You will need to look up quite a bit. Better save your pennies..those DG heads and a GOOD sectional pipe will set you back, a LOT.
Mike_Ham_250R
01-31-2007, 09:57 PM
12:1 id go with that. They are rare. I don't even know of any made for an 82 r?

LOL yeah. A stock 82 R has about 6.7:1 compression. I'm damn sure they don't make a 12:1.

Do not waste your time or money on engine mods until your chassis set up. You need to be LOW, like bottom frame rails 3 inches off the ground. You want the lowrider guys sayin "DAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYUUUUUUUUMMMM!" You need good suspension that isn't worn out leaking oil all out of the forks and rear shock. You need width either from a wheel spacer on right side of the axle or an extended axle and you need tires. Walmart turf savers for $45 will work great. Don't even bother with he engine until all of that is done.

Billy Golightly
01-31-2007, 10:20 PM
what size hoosiers? a trike needs small, very small, rear tires for racing on the clay tracks. Even an 18inch hoosier, it will be 10 or 11inches wide and near impossible to get the rear broke loose with.

hmmm im probly gonna go with the R forks for now and maybe use inverts later get some tripples made for my spare kx 250 forks?
firefirefire90
01-31-2007, 10:39 PM
I wouldnt go with inverts on the flattracker. You dont need all of the travel that the KX's deliver. It would really be pointless.
team-red-rider
01-31-2007, 10:39 PM
would that work??? and im gonna get a works rear shock
Mike_Ham_250R
01-31-2007, 10:40 PM
KX250 inverts are too small. I hear that the KTM 300exc are the forks to have on a trike nowadays.
team-red-rider
01-31-2007, 10:40 PM
hmm can i just use a set of 85/86 R forks?
firefirefire90
01-31-2007, 10:42 PM
You have them mistaken with the KTM85 forks. Inverts are POINTLESS on a trike for flattrack. You need to get LOW. Work's doesn't make a rear shock. Just get yours rebuilt and re-valved for your weight. You don't need an aftermarket shock for racing unless you are going to go professional.
Mike_Ham_250R
01-31-2007, 10:44 PM
hmm can i just use a set of 85/86 R forks?
No they arent good enough because firefire is wrong.
In flattrack when you go into a bend when you hit the brakes the forks bottom out from trying to stop a trike doing like 90mph like you will be doing. You want long travel and you need front brakes from a streetbike.
team-red-rider
01-31-2007, 10:44 PM

Why have looks without an engine to back it up. And why have an good engine in something that you can't control..... If I were doing this... I would figure out a way like Sykolincoln by using the 200x rear shock. Just lower the front forks. wider axle or spacers.. Then worry bout the engine... I'd rather have a good running and good handling trike that looks crappy. Than a trike that looks sweet and don't run for *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited*. I made this mistake once already on my 200x. I tore it all down and painted everything and got it looking half way decent, where I shouldve just got the engine rebuilt. Just my .02 cents

If your wanting to build a flat tracker, please do some research and find out what does and does not work first. You don't need to re-invent the wheel before you even get onto the track for the first time.

good GOD, 30+ posts in the last 20min.
Do EXACTLY as smyers33 said or just leave your shocks alone and just adjust preload in the rear and lower the front. get some 2" wheel spacers and you'll be pimpin.
Now just try and hook up the electronics since you have the whole bike there and see if they work. This isnt rocket science.
Maybe this thread should be put under the title of the sticky, "For the love of God, Don't type like an idiot!"

Wow, I didn't say that?
YEah, but listen to the people who aren't yanking your chain. Get the trike LOW and then worry about motor mods. You aren't much of an experienced triker looking at the trikes in your sig, once you get comforatble with the 250R with rebuilt stock suspension and lowered some, then you can get serious suspension. You really are only racing for fun. Don't get new 800 dollar shocks or anything. A good rebuild and a lowering will do its job. I wouldn't put a 200x shock in there. That shock is valved for a "pro-link" type suspension..not a single link suspension. You would have to get it re-valved which is quite expensive. An Ohlins shock for a blaster should bolt up quite easily. And they only cost 200-300 dollars according to ebay.

dont even need to use 200x front end. Just lower the tripples and shave the stops.
ship all these parts as they come in to my house, I will put it together and set it up how it needs to be set up for the track, you dont need a wicked motor out there, jsut a decent running one, dont need a 200x front, infact I think you will be better off with the stock front, I will put together and set up for free as long as you get the needed parts for it. MY OFFER STANDS NOW, THIS IS THE LAST TIME I WILL POST IN THIS THREAD. pm me if you are serious. I dont want some kid to come out to the track and possibly killing himself becouse he listened to to many people about building his ride, or thinking something was "cool" but is bad for racing.

Yes you are, I love side scrolling!
Don't worry about looks! FIRST make it a solid runner then worry about cosmetics. Wish I had took my own advice the first time around on my Tecate build, would have gotten a lot more seat time vs looking at a pretty machine.

I raced my first flat track race this weekend. I'm totally hooked. This is my calling.
It was on a stock 350X that I lowered the forks in and strapped the rear swingarm to suck it down. Don't even think shocks were needed. Pics at 3wheeler.org.
Next year, look for an open-piped, 4-stroke, nerf-bumpered Alky/Nitro burning screamer on the track.
FWIW, I will be out in FL in a couple months to vacation.....

Hey Rex I would not use a strap....it will kill you. It's been a long time since I fooled around with a 350, but I believe that you can lower the rear end easily by removing the lower spacer on the swingarm and bolting the shock directly to the swinger.
Just an FYI.
