I was wondering if there is a trick to getting the rubber mounts in the front fender out so I can use them on my new one? And what exactly does the reed cage do on a two stoke??:wondering

First thing is make sure they are warm, not half frozen from being outside.
There is a metal bushing inside of each one.........push that out.
Then simply squeeze them with your fingers and work 'em out.
Sometimes a little soap water might help. Just squirt a little on so it works in between the grommet and the fender, then wipe the grommet off, and push it out.
To install......soap the fender, push the grommet through, put a little soap in the hole of the rubber grommet and push the metal bushing in.....and you're done.

The reeds on a 2-stroke act kinda like the intake valve on a 4-stroke. The open and close the intake tract.
When the piston is on the bottom, coming up the cylinder, it makes vacuum in the crankcase.
As it comes past the intake port, the vacuum starts pulling the reeds open, sucking fuel/air from the carb. This will happen untill the piston comes to Top Dead Center, roughly.
Then you have combustion.....spark.......boom......piston is coming down.
Now you have pressure in the crankcase, forcing the reeds shut as the piston goes past the intake port, keeping a constant pressure in the crankcase and pushing fuel through the transfer ports to be compressed and combusted when the piston comes back up again.
Reeds help increase engine efficiency by keeping the fuel mixture in the engine where it should be, instead of getting spitback.
If you've ever ridden an old sled with the carb by your crotch you'll know what I mean....LOL
