hey guys My 350x has smoked like a B**** for awhile so i decided to park it until i got it fixed, whatever the problem may be. So i finally tore the motor apart and these pics are what i found. I have never really had to tear INTO a motor other than my early R's and 200x. Heres a couple pics. Whats it look like? valves? rings? yea i know you cant even hardly see the spark plug :(

looks like rings to me. but while your doing rings you may as well do the valves too.

By looking at the pic's ,I am gonna say you have a heavy carbon deposit on the exhaust seats or a seal went out on the exhaust side..Take the spring /retainers off of all the valves and look down the ports and spin the valves ,hold it up to some light and see if you can see any light threw the valve's while you are spinning them.. I am willing to bet that you see light, you mite possibly have a bent valve also..since you are at this point now I would put in new seals and have the seats cut as well as the valves to optimize that compression,I know Honda says don't ,but I have done alot of heads with 3 cuts and all is fine..But lap them and see what you have.. I say the exhaust side because if you look at the intake you don't see tha heavy carbon deposit that you do on the exhaust ,obviously oil on the piston also, but not the whole top, mostly exaust side also..If it were rings the whole piston would be carboned up..Give it a hone ,new rings and do the head and you should be good too go!!

bent valve? they just dont bend on there own, now this is something i always look at too but if the piston has no marks on it i wouldn't be to worried about the valves.
id say just rebuild it and use new valve seals and you'll be fine

Yeah just give her a hone and new rings. While your at it put new seals in the head and lap your valves in and you should be fine.

bent valve? Now why could'nt it be a bent valve..Of course he needs to look at the valves SWINGIN,thats absurb advice... I have built alot of these motors and on more than one or two occasions had to change them out with new one's.Why would they even make new one's then?? A Bent valve can be a issue on any 4 stroke and stems should always be checked ,as well as guides ,springs ,retainers and seals !!! Ask a guy with a 450R nowadays who does'nt check there valves and or adjust them!!!

like i said i always check them but valves done just bend on there own

i'll have to try and figure out how to take the valves out :wondering and check them. I am kinda hoping piston rings and new valve guide seals will do it. I might just go ahead and fork out the cash to get new valves and everything that MIGHT be bad up there.

i use a spring compressor that looks like a c clamp with a forked end to compress the springs and then you can remove the keepers http://www.kd-tools.com/385.htm

to check the vlave seat do this. pour some thinner in the exhaust port and see if it seeps out the valve. do the same for the intake. if it leaks through you need to have a valve job done. you should atleast change the seals. you can buy a valve spring compressor tool at harbor freight pretty cheap.
Maybe an Valve Guide O ring is bad.To change this O Ring you have to remove the Valve Guide to get to the O Ring.

well i just bought a valve spring compressor, hope it works. I also bought a complete gasket set AND a top end gasket set so i should have all the o-rings/gaskets i need i think.
My complete Veshra Gasket set came with everything.

well i just measured it all and the piston needs replaced. I think i MIGHT be able to use the stock jug and get a stock piston/rings for it.

What did you measure on the piston? It looks like it should be fine? Just a new set of rings and a light hone on the jug should fix you up? Stock piston/ rings? Are you talking about getting a OEM piston and rings? or are you saying Stock size piston and rings? Maybe I am not understanding what you are saying? If you replace the piston you most always have to go to a larger than stock size and also bore the cylinder. If the piston is out of spec. Then the cylinder probably is too?

Id say it looks like a valve has touched the piston

I think thats some flake off of the gasket.
I was planning on getting stock size but the piston is out of round. I cant remember exactly what it measured but it was smaller than the 80.90mm that the manual calls for. Maybe i can sell this 350x cobra exaust i have and get enough for a piston/rings.
