Heat the bearings/carrier alittle while keeping a cold wet rag on both sides of the axle. Then use a b;pck of wood and a hammer to bang it out.

put a old hub on the end,if you got one, and use a piece of wood as a buffer and beat it, try adding heat also.

Don't know the condition but if rusted in there maybe a tranny fluid bath is in order....let it sit overnight then use the block of wood with a big fing hammer!

thats what id try. if you dont have a "scrap" hub then put a nut on the threads and go to town. just watch it after every hit so you dont mess anything up. IF you happen to crack the carrier im sure that someone here will have one.

tony, if you can get the carrier out of the swing arm pop the seal out of the brake hub side, then the seal off the bearing itself . then take a small punch and drive it in between the balls in the bearing, what you want to do is punch or pick out all the cage that holds the balls. once you have that out you can push all the balls together on one side of the bearing, push the axle up in to the open space left by moving the balls. then you can usualy shake the carrier and axle and the balls will fall out. it is much easier to do than it sounds. once you have one bearing appart it is usuly easier to drive the axel out, some times the other bearing will come out on the axle but thats ok it has to come out any way. its worth a shot.

Aussie, I use a big heavy lead hammer when I come accross a stuck axle. Then I eat the left over lead chip (just kidding). Anyway the lead does'nt hurt the axle at all & really hits hard. I have found that leaving the swinger on the bike makes It easier also. I had one real stubborn 85 R axle, I flipped the nuts around so the flat flange was sticking out even with the ends of the axle. I then held a 1/4" thick piece of flat stock against the nut & vibrated It back & forth with my knarly Air chizzel until It finally came out.

i would take the swingarm off and press it out

I would be worried about pressing against the side of the axle carrier. On a 86 It Is not flat & Is real briddle anyway. I know alot of people cringe when they see a air chizzel. But If you don't go nuts & let the chizzel bit slam hard against the piece you don't want to hurt, You would be amazed at what a little vibration does for rusted parts.

I picked up an 86 r swinger/axle assembly form the local scrap yard several weeks ago. It took me about 3 hours to get the axle out of the carrier. Part of it was due to the brake hub being rusted on.

Aussie! I agree with Swigin. If all else fails remove the brake rotor hub,and pull the carrier out of the swingarm.Take the axle and carrier to a machine shop with a press. They can press it out lickity split. This is how I took Mrs.Mosh's 250 r axle out and once I put it in the press,It took 3 minutes to do with no damage to components. That one was siezed like yours is.They should not charge you to much at all.Maybe 20 dollars at the most.

The brake hub is frozen on as well,i will give it a few hits over the weekend then if no go will give it to Mart of the forum as he works in a machine shop so he can press it out , im wanting to get moving with this as my frame is back from the powdercoaters today.

i ended up destroying my brake hub from hitting it with a hammer to try and get it off. Wacked myself in the shins 2 times once in the wrist and it still broke the brake hub and took 3 hours. I much rather pay $20 than do that all over again.

Dammit!

How did you end up getting the frozen brake hub off? I'm wrestling with that problem right now myself. Freakin thing won't budge a millimeter.
