View Full Version : Any voltage regulator that would work in an 86 200X?

I know that they all perform the same job and most any 2 wire VR would work, but I'm wondering what else may slip on the frame bracket on the 1986 200X on the left side. It's just a one ear bracket that accepts a rubber mounts slot.

You guys who have a bunch of ATC's would know better than me but I'm thinking that the 250R had a rubber mounted VR that might slip on there. I had an R but can't remember. Does anyone have any insight on one that may work?

I have a Banshee VR but it only has one wire?? I guess it uses the one wire and ground but I'm not sure if I could use it.

Dennis Kirk sells a universal one they call a voltpack for about $15.

One wire is ground so if you get a one wire type, the ground is made through the mount.

Yep, these work VERY well. I can probably beat DK's Price and also ship them cheaper ( if you was to order under $100 worth of stuff from them ).

Thank you for the suggestion!

I was kinda hoping on using another Honda VR - like a 350X or 250R. There pretty cheap on EBAY and I hope one will slip over the 86 frame nub and look kinda stock.

Howdy, any idea why the SX VR has 2 sets of wires? I don't have a wiring diagram to see why.

Is a 2 wire VR simply one wire in and one out with the regulator in series? And then sent up to the headlight with the regulated hot wire? I wonder how a Banshee gets away with a one wire VR????

I'll have to start a thread requesting a picture of both and there mounting.

No, it is not in series. One wire goes to the output and the other goes to ground. When output exceeds the voltage configuration of the regulator, it is shorted to ground via the regulator. As I said before, on a one wire system, your ground "wire" is the bolt that mounts it to the frame.

I forgot that Howdy sells those, or Id have steered you there. Your going to have a tough time getting a "cheaper" one that has to be shipped.

AHA, thank you for that answer! That means that I can run the Banshe VR which has one wire and the case itself is ground. Just need to identify the 86 200X ground wire - easy enough. I still have alot of free Banshee parts including a VR and now I can mount my 350X headlight. Thanks very much!!
