View Full Version : WINCH WOES................My last ditch effort

Ok, so heres the thing.

I have installed a winch on my 85 Honda atc 200s.
This modle did not come with a battery (electric start, etc.)

The stator only powers the head and tail light which needless to say isn't enuff juice to power the winch. So I installed a battery.

My question is...... Is there any way to hook up the stator (power converter, Regulator, etc.) so that it will charge the battery while I ride. Or anything else I can add to charge the battery.

I have called numerous shops and parts suppliers to no avail.
It is amazing how few people know anything about these older bikes. Me included. But I'm learning.

The battery on full charge will run the winch enuff to pull me or one of my buddies out maybe twice unless we fall off into a grave or something. Which may be enuff but I would love to be able to steadily charge while I ride instead of haveing to hook it up to a charger the night before and hopeing there is enuff juice for what we need.

Anyway, Now I'm rambling.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Please email me if you have any info I could use.

maybe a wiring harness off of a bike with a battery and electric start would help you? 84 atc 200m

there should be a small wheel powered generator system similar to the one that drives the headlight / taillight system on pedal bikes, if it could be rigged up on a rear wheel or axle that would supply some power when your atc is in motion and probably supply a battery with a recharge every hour or 2.

Thanks darrel. That is deffinitly somthing worth looking into.

I have asked a couple of these "mechanics" about a wiring harness and they said it wouldn't work. Just not enuff juice.

A rectifier may come in handy here

If you use the full electronic system off a 200m,e,es (anything with a battery)it should work fine i would think. Because (electronically speaking) there the same engine as your 200s. Just they have the battery in the wiring harness.

Makes sense to me. I'm gonna look for one and give it a shot.

Thanx Cd.

You will need a little more than a wiring harness off a trike with a battery. The left side cases are different, along with the crank, and stator. You'll need the stator also, which includes the generator for the battery. On these trikes with batterys the flywheel and stator are mounted 'backward', which is why the crank and cases are different. You will need all of this stuff to make it work right.
