So I am trying to get Battlefield 2 on my computer.. and I found out that even though my computer had the top-notch stuff a year ago, it now doesn't. I tried to put the game on my computer and found out that my NVIDIA GeForce MX video card is apparently out of date and so is my RAM. I need a better video card and more memory to play the game. More memory is no problem.. but the video card is what I'm not sure about. I looked at my computer, and the video card seems to be built into the motherboard, but all of the ones I see online go into the peripheral slots in your computer. Should I just get one of these cards? Will it work?

Fist what do you mean by top notch, socket , chip? um it would appear from what you are saying that you are running the on board graphix. you need to buy a card but first we need to know the board you have?
Second, to run that game without i being choppy you really need 2gigs of ram

My brothers laptop has 1 GB of RAM and it runs fine. I was just going to get a 1 gig stick so then I would have 1 1/2 gigs total.
And I'm not exactly sure what the motherboard I have.. but it has a 3000+ AMD Athlon XP processor and GeForce4 MX graphics chip. Its right on the motherboard, so I'm assuming its a chip.

You need to figure out if your motherboard has an AGP slot or not.
Pop open the case.. and snap a picture.

You need a PCI card, recommend a Nvidia Geforce 5500 and up series, even a 7500 would be top notch enough for you. gig and a half is more then fine also.
www.tigerdirect.com is a great place to look for computer parts, pretty good prices also

Why would he want a pci.. when he has a advance grapic port? i would look for a Nvida card. 6200 would be a nice find around 35-40 bucks on ebay new. love my card but my 8800gts blows its doors off lol. For the ram if you have 512 i think you will be safe.

That's right I didn't notice the AGP slot above the PCI's. I always thought PCI was better then AGP, or is that PCI express?
As for 512mb of ram, that's not really fast enough for anything to do with video's it's pretty much the minimum you could have, a gig is more standard by far.

Yeah AGP WAS the better one until PCIe came out also I would try to put as much RAM in as your MB will take, you can never have enough RAM lol!!!

Goes
Old - ISA
Then - PCI
Recent - AGP
Newest - PCI Express
As far as Ram goes.. 1 Gb would be plenty.. any more than that you are better off investing into a better vid card.

Those are the 2 things I was going to get. What do you think?
I want atleast 256MB of mem on the video card, and atleast a 1 gig stick of RAM. Are those good buys?

what kinda games will you be playing? I got a ATI 1900 xtx and its byfar the best card i've ever owned..when the fan kicks on it can get a bit loud but everything runs smooth no matter what im doing..might be a bit more then what your wanting to spend..But its worth it :)

What is the difference between the PCI and PCIe slots? I found 2 cards.. one that uses a PCI slot and ones uses a PCIe slot.. the one that uses the PCIe slot is better but I don't think my computer has a PCIe slot. Anyone know?

what are the specs, im running stock (integrated video card) and only 478mb of ram, and i got a amd 64 athlon at 1.79ghz and i can run counter strike source fine and im sure css is a more graphic game, so install it and try it out on low settings. if it lags try ram first, if still go video card. pci is for older comps say a 02 celeron, pci-e is the new card better then agp.

My computer is only about a year/year and a half old. Its an eMachines with AMD Ahtlon XP 3000+ processor (2.2 GHz), 512 of RAM, and a GeForce4 FX graphics card (integrated). The minimum requirements just to run the game require 512 of RAM, 128MB of display memory, and a 1.7 GHz processor. My graphics card only has 64MB of memory so I cannot run the game.. and it also says that my computer only has 448.5MB of RAM.. so you really need 1GB of RAM to run the game because a 512MB stick of RAM doesnt really have exactly 512MB.

Hey Ben, I can tell you right now you will probably have a hard time playing on that processor. I think you want at least a 3.0 Ghz to play BF2. Not that there is too much you can do about that without buying a new PC. 1.5 GB of RAM will be enough, and I'd recommend a GeForce 7600, just to be on the safe side. PCIe, of course.
Talk to me on MSN if you need any help! :beer

Naw you should be fine on low settings, your computer is more upgradded then mine and mine handles fine, the requirments are bull, go ahead install it try it and see , i mean it might save ya some $$ so go 4 it. If it lags up grade and so on but try it first just to be sure, on low settings you shoudl be good.

It's not that it's really "not" 512M, it's because you have onboard video that is sharing your physical memory, which is why it only reports 448.

I know the thread is old, but if you're going to be playing BF2, I would stray away from 5500. They are weak. I would go with something like a 6800 or an X800. But you may need upgrade your power supply doing so. As for ram, I wouldn't go anymore than 1gig. Unless you do an extreme amount of gaming, it really isn't needed. 1 gig will give you plenty and then some. Make sure you know what kind of ram your computer needs. Also, I found the best computer site, is Newegg.com.
I can run oblivion nicely with my rig, and it's only a mid end:
2.2GHz opteron 148 OC'd to 2.6
Thermaltake 500W Dual Rail PSU
2x512 Mushkin BH5 (RAM)
X800GTO PCI-E with 16 pipe modded(which makes it exactly like XL version)
