View Full Version : '86/'87 T3 Pipe Problem Solved! Well....sorta

There's definitely a lack of sources on performance pipes for the '86/'87 2nd gen T3. No news there. Today...I talked to Pro Circuit. Never made a pipe for the 2G T3. (Makes me wonder what pipe is REALLY on the $4900 T3 on E-Bay). I also talked to Harry Klemm himself about the old Klemm Research pipes. He told me the company that made them was Power Pros and that I might get lucky talking to them. So I called Power Pros. Nope. Jigs are long gone. Soooooo....I called Dynoport and talked to the owner. He said they DID make a pipe for the 2G T3:w00t: BUT.....here's the catch...they never made a jig. He could build a custom, hand coned pipe...about $500, but he would need the bike there at the shop and wouldn't be able to start 'till the end of April.:(. Tecate Connection said he would consider making a few but not 'till June. Forget DG...basically a stock replacement pipe IMHO. So who does that leave us??

I heard something about a kx250 pipe that is almost an exact fit, I read it on the board awhile ago.
Im not far from Dynoport. Raffa knows the owner, they did his 490 pipe. I have 1 86T3 and 1 87T3. After TF07 I could drop off my 86 to them as a donor trike. Will they be making a jig? I am not interested in a $500 pipe at the moment, but if they build a jig and the price comes down.... I would!!!!
Keep me informed

Yeah 200x basket modded a Pro-circuit KX250 pipe from what I remember. Theres another oldschool pipe company, Jemco, you might give them a ring. Maybe you'll get lucky.

I have an 86 KX250 pipe that is about the same except the stinger bend at the end. I believe it is a Pro Circuit. This leads me to believe more of the later 80's PC or whatever brand pipes for KX250 could be made to work.

I will post a pic of when I can, but I held the pipe up to the other pipe on the trike and they look the same to me except the stinger bends in the wrong direction at the end. Unfortunately when I got it in the mail it had a big dent and a small crack in it that the seller forgot to mention. It was worth $20 to find out if the option existed. These pipes are still available new.

Cool. Post pics of every angle of the pipes side by side when you can. If it's just a stinger mod in need of attention, them I'm all for it.:w00t:

Pro Circuit states the model # for the PLATINUM 1985-86 KX250 pipe is pk85250p and retails $229 Manufacturers Suggested Rip-off Price with a factory direct order.
The ebay seller responded the pipe on the $4900 trike says "pk25850p".
Either he mistyped on accident or on purpose, but all the numbers are there scrambled.
Pipe Kawasaki 85 250 Platinum
PK85250 is for "works" pipe.
Also FMF versions may be available.

Well here is the $20 KX250 pipe I believe is for 1986. Unfortunatley it was damaged when I got it. Sorry, I have no comparison pictures with my DG pipe yet.

Again I held this pipe up to my other one but never installed it. They looked very similar except the stinger bend at the end.

I wouldnt be surprised if a much newer low-boy style pipe could also be used. The exhaust exits the cylinder at a slightly different angle, but I bet it wouldnt take much to change it

Here is a NOS 85-86 KX250 Pro Circuit pipe on my T3.
Is it a perfect fit? No. Are all after market pipes perfect?...........
Did I have to bend it a lot? No.
The mounting tab lines up , but not without some work to get it that way. And of course a rubber grommet will be used in the space in the picture. When tightening the pipe down it approaches the cylinder head and one could bend the pipe on it.
Next the pipe stinger wants to pull out towards the plastic. Basically the silencer would mount straight on and pull the stinger in towards the frame.
The pipe flange and exhaust port line up fairly well.
The kicker is touching the side of the pipe unlike on my DG where it would wedge under and rub the bottom of the pipe.
Well does this answer the question?

So what about the 1st gen T-3's? Would that be about the same thing, just get a KX pipe and bend it to fit?

first gen t3's head pipes are different then the second gen t3. youonly have a single down tube on the frame and the headpipe exits at an angle then wraps around the down tube and over to the otherside of the bike where the 2nd gen t3 exits straight out of the exhaust port and goes in between the split frame rails. not sure if your talking about a 83-84 kx pipe or not.

I have an 84 KX20 pipe and it is a no go for the first gen. 84-85 T3.
The pipe starts on the right and crosses over the motor to the left.

Try moving the kicker forward 1 or 2 teeth so it does not rub. I had to do that on my pipe. Like Billy said check out Jemco. That is what I have and it runs good and looks good.
Edit: http://www.jemcoexhaust.com/ If you check out the products link they mention 250cc 2 stroke. Its worth a shot

Here are a few pics. On one of the sections it is stamped Jemco but I could not get it to show up in the pics. If you look at the last pic you can see the kicker tilted forward a bit to clear the pipe.

I was talking about the 83-84 KX250 pipe. Could you just use the KXT pipe up to the expansion chamber then use the KX pipe after, or would that just defeat the purpose of the after market pipe.

Nice. How's the fit ?? Is that chrome or nickle ?? I talked to Jon a while back and he said it was a hand coned pipe but I didn't realize it was to that extent. Very nice.

Thats cool to know that they will still make the pipe. Mine was on the bike when I got it, I went and had it chromed because it was getting rust spots. It cost $125 to chtome it and it took 3 days because I had to ship it out.

I'm in the process of doing that right now. Picked up a nice DG pipe off E-Bay CHEAP so I gave it the BBQ overhaul. Still flyin' from the fumes!!

I don't know who did it. My neighbor owns a company that makes dune buggies so he just took it to his shop and had his guy do it for me. All I know is the actual shop is in Mexico because there are too many laws and regulations to do it in California.

nd4speed... How does the pro-circuit pipe compare to the DG? I am trying to figure out which pipe I want to modify for my LT when I swap to the '85 KX engine...

Another option for those on the west cost is Shearer custom pipes. The catch, there again, is that you would have to drop the trike off. I believe Kenny Roberts still works there, and they build some excellent pipes.

I could not tell much of a difference between the two.
