I worked deep into the night last night and most of the day today to finish my Tecate project; now it is 95% done. I cranked it and rode it around the yard this evening. Everything on this trike has been touched and either replaced or cleaned and painted. I made a couple performance mods: VForce Delta 2 reeds and DG pipe and silencer. I made some practical mods: a Honda 110 tool box and 86 T3 dogbone uni-trak link. 13/38 sprockets with 20 inch Pirelli Race Rail XC tires on Douglas rims.

Still to do: front brakes and seat foam and cover. Down the line: Front Max tire.

Check it out, I'm excited as heil about how it turned out. Chris

Looks very nice. Is that the airbox you bought from me? or a different one?

That's the airbox that came with my trike. I used the filter cage and rubber parts from the airbox I got from you. Also notice the new lid from Aussieduner. I didn't have a filter cage. Tried to mod a 86 filter cage with some success, but was happy to get the correct one.

Yeah I thought so. Where did you get that skid plate?

I got it off ebay. It's for a kx250, 91-94, I think. I had to redrill the two front holes and then adjust it with a hammer so the headpipe wouldn't hit it. The oil drain plug even lines-up with the hole it the plate.

I got a chance to ride it a bit today, but just around in the neighborhood. I didn't want to push it too much till the new rings seat. Before I started this rebuild one of the crankseals in the engine was leaking, the engine smoked badly and was down on power. As a consequence I was running an 11-tooth front sprocket with 42 tooth rear, just to get this thing to power down the trails. Well that all seems changed now. During the rebuild I put on a 13 tooth front and 38 tooth rear, kinda worried about power, but most of the Tecate riders run something like that, or even taller. My first impression from the rebuilt engine is...holy cow!!!!!! The engine now pulls the higher gearing much better than it ever pulled the super-low gearing I was running. It pulls hard, revs quickly and sounds even better. It now has that classic 2-stroke sound to accompany all the new-found power. And all this from regular petroleum oil mixed at 18:1, just for the ring seating though. I'll switch to Mobil 1 Racing 2T after this break-in tank is run. I'm sure I'll find even more hair-raising pull and a bigger powerband with the synthetic mixed at 40 or 50 to 1.

I made a couple 80% throttle runs up through third and it sputtered on the top-end. I think it's too much oil for the jetting I have now. I'm jetted for 40:1 or so. Might have to rejet after I break it in now that I have the DG pipe.

All-in-all I'm happy with the rebuild and with the power. I did notice one thing I wanted to ask about. I installed a set of VForce Delta 2 reeds from a KX dirt bike. Anyone running those reeds, do they have allot of mechanical noise? It seems the engine now has a very loud mechanical clatter that it didn't have before. I'm wondering if it is the reeds or is this regular old petroleum oil just making that much noise in this engine? For comparison, it sounds like my Ryobi 2-stroke weedwhacker, very mechanical. I hope it's the reeds, I have 2 gallons of this premix to burn up.

IS this the first time you have rode it with that new headpipe? If so then thats prolly what you are hearing is just all the pinging and other various nosies that they make compared to a stock unit.

Great stuff! My T3 had no trouble pulling 22inch tires on 14/38 gearing. The Vforce reeds and DG pipe may be whats making you break up on topend. A larger main would be wise to try after you have it all broke in.
