View Full Version : 85 250r REAR BRAKE problem
my caliper is junk! I have completly taken it apart and miticulsly cleaned it, but it still isnt right! the caliper site crooked to the mount wich causes my pads to drag wich in turn heats up the fluid to the point where it locks down on the disc causing it to lock the rear up, I would have finished in second at the last race if this didnt happen, I cant for the life of me figure out why the caliper is siting crooked, everything moves freely, wtf?!

you can see in the second pic where the disc has actually cut into the mount

Are your slide pins free, where the mount will slide side to side from the caliper?

I don't know... I've seen some pretty beat up seized junk ruined calipers but haven't had that drag heat up my fluid.
But, if you think something is bent, your gonna have to mount it without pads and start taking some measurements. I'd also check the pins as BG said but make sure they are round and straight.
That long pin mount in the caliper casting looks off. Most of the calipers out there were seized at one point and get beat real hard to get them apart for a rebuild.
You can remove both pins and the mount. Then put something straight and round about 4" long in there holes. Measure it with a caliper and see if it'a off. I'd use a set of tranfer punches for that purpose. If something is bent and you get creative in measuring and indicating the rotor itself, you'll find it!

If the front caliper will work out back, I've got one that was working 3 years ago that has been indoors ever since that I'll give you.

i got a good rear mount you can get your hands on too.i also got a front caliper doing me no good.
i have had all sorts of rear brake problemms this year aswell.mine were caused by the brake lever hanging up in the frame, thus the rear brake was held on untill the fluid got hot enough to boil.that causes no brakes.i am not sure why your is locking up,if the fluid gets hot,the brakes fail.let me know if i can help with parts

something is bent. It looks as the front pin is bent, maybe the mounting bracket is bent too. I have new mounting brackets and pins. If you want to sell it, you can send it here. I like to reburish the calipers, I have done so on front and rear calipers.

My rear caliper on my 350x is crap. It does not work. Good pads, but no pressure.:(

I had the same problem with my tri-z.I used a warrior or banshee master cylinder.the brakes froze right up. then when it cooled down they worked again Todd 200xman noticed that the adjustment at the master was just a little different then the stock triz. He adjusted it there so that there was soo much pressure when i braked. You might want to pm him and ask him about it again. i cant remember what he did.but my problem was at the master not the caliper.
ok well I'm still screwing with this damn rear brake caliper

if this is suposed to move then this is the problem, if its not then im clueless, this is about all the stuff I can do right now, as I jsut sit most of the day either by my comp and phone or at the hospital right now:cry:

hey, the caliper should slide on that pin. so that's the problem then, free it up, and it should work right.
ok well I got it soaking in pb blaster now, so hopefully it will loosen up

You found the Problem ... maybe a little heat can free it up

Yep, you found the culprit.
Now, they hard part begins, that pin usually get's locked up real good and won't come out. I can't remember if that pin has a steel sleeve in there but I believe it does and it's not gonna wanna let go of the pin, they have become best friends :D
I have fixed many calipers and destroyed a few too!
If you can't get it out easily (and I'll bet you won't!!) I suggest drilling a hole in the aluminum blind slide and pressing it out. That is the only thing that started working for me with those pins stuck inside. I usually drill a .250 hole and use a hard dowel pin to get it out.
Most people destroy the caliper trying to get it to a rebuildable condition.
well I won! I put the caliper in my vise, and used my ginourmous snap on air hammer to move that puppy out!, well it did and I had to dig the pin out of the wall in my shop after wards, I wire wheeled the pin and put a scotchbrite on a drill and cleaned out the shaft, after wards I added a little wheel grease to the pin and put it in the shaft and it moves easiely in and out now, hopefully this has cured my rear brake problem

Thats not fair, you didn't say you had a Snap-On air chisel!! Anyhow, glad you got it out :beer
