It has been about 3 months since I had my bike out and just recently I was able to ride after my surgury. I had just gotten the thing running great today until i ran into a little problem..... My grooves on the front sprocket shaft are completely gone in the middle!! I thought that I had just thrown the chain but then when I looked down and saw the shaft spinning inside the sprocket I realized that I was in some pretty deep shat. Is the current shaft repairable? If not is it easy to change it out for a new one without splitting the cases?? Any info on this possible fix would be awesome. Thanks guys (glad to be back! :w00t:) Later.

iv seen this happen before, the only ''correct'' way to fix this is to get a replacement shaft.

the problem is as far as i know they are discontinued from honda so id start checking ebay

one way to help this from happening is some sprockets are thicker then others and the thicker ones will contact more of the splines and help to stop this from happening.

i use sunstar sprockets...they have the extra step on them

buy a new sprocket and have it welded to the shaft. you'll just have to grind the weld off when you get ready to replace the shaft or sprocket. i've done this to mine and it lasted for years. if your chain is jumping you probably need new bearings in the rear.

I have 4 or 5 of these shafts laying around if you need 1 I would split the cases and do it right welding them is a bad option in my book

haha good luck on splitting the cases. i've rebuilt a few bikes now, and i split the cases once on my 200x because of the same reason, stripped shaft. needless to say i ended up getting another bottom end. and then that bottom end had a crap tranny.

moral of the story, pay someone to do it right, or weld it and call it a day.

Yeah I was thinking that I would end up having to split the cases to correctly repair it :( . I'll send a pm towards your way when I get ready to tear this beast apart again so I can buy one of those shafts off of you :beer . Looks like a lot of work ahead of me..... Thanks for the reply's guys.

I have a 350x at the shop that has a welded sprocket on it. I got this motor from Bill_X_R around 5 years ago. I have had NO problems with it either. I'm waiting for something else to go wrong before I do any motor splitting. I figure I have 3-4 ( maybe more ) years before I even think about changing it.

i think the 300ex shaft is the same,. not absolutely sure though

hey, try this, buy a new sprocket. grind the teeth off the old sprocket, or cut the center out. weld the old sprocket to the new one, and you have a double wide.

What I'm thinking of doing as a temporary fix is try and rig up some spacers to keep the sprocket in the spot where there are still some good grooves left, if I can do that it should hold up until I get a better place built to work on my bike. Lets hope it works!

HowdyTrust me on this, if you do weld it...get the replacement for it now while you can. You can save it for later on. Thats what I'd do, nothing wrong with the weld.

So if I decided to do that would it be easy cutting off the sprocket when I go to replace the shaft later on? I'm starting to think about doing the welding job on the shaft since it will last me a long while and it will hold me until I get the shop built and the correct tools to perform the job. I think also if I do this I'll invest in some sidewinder sprockets for extra durablility until I get ready to replace it. What do you guys think? :wondering

i like 4cylinders idea. i dont see why that cant/wont work. as hard as parts are to find. you'd be money ahead to go ahead and get a countershaft for it tho.

Yup, 4cylinders idea should work great!

theres not enough room for a double wide

Actually there is enough room to fit too sprockets in there while still using the retainer clip for the outside. I just got done fabbing up the spacer sprocket that I ground off about an 8th of an inch away from the bolt hole on the sprocket then i ground some of the flat side off the sprocket to where the clip would barely turn and line up with the bolt holes. I then just bolted the two sprockets together, absolutely no slack on the sprocket shaft, fits very nice and does what I want it to (keep it on the good grooves! lol). Couldn't ask for a better fix.:w00t: I'll get some pics posted up on this fix as soon as I can. Thanks a lot guys for the input it really helped out a lot.:beer

you must of had 2 thin sprockets.......thats why it striped in the first place

you must of had 2 thin sprockets.......thats why it striped in the first place The one that I had grinded the teeth off of was really wide and I had to grind it down quite a bit, but the sunstar sprocket I bought was thin like another old sprocket I had. That was what I was thinking about why it stripped, I don't think that there will be any chance now for it to strip the good grooves since there is no play at all on the shaft.
