I run a 15/44 with 22" tires and its fine for trails and that 15 helps when I run 18"s on the mx track.. how does it ride? does it wind out fast in 1st and 2nd.. thats what mine did so I went up a tooth to help it not rev out really fast

Theres a big difference betwen the 85 and 86, but its pretty simple to tell if you need a gearing change. If you frequently top out in high gear, you probably need to gear up. If you frequently need to downshift when you are already in 1st gear, you probably need to gear down. If you are frequently slipping the clutch to maintain a low speed on the trails, you probably need to gear down. If you frequently find yourself in a situation of shifting back and forth between two gears, where one is too high and the other too low, you can correct it by gearing in either direction. This rarely occurs on trails, but is common for a specific race track. Generally 1 tooth on the front=3.5 teeth on the rear. Generally two teeth on the front equals one full gear change. Low gear is higher on the 85 than the 86 with the same sprockets. Im now at 13/48 on both of them. The 85 tops out easily, even with 22" tires but it only sees trails and MX where its not a problem.
